My turbo AU blew a little heater hose today (one of the LPG convertor ones), naturally the heat shot right up. I stopped over a dip on the shoulder to get under the car and using some of my high quality bush mechanics skills used a 5c peice to undo the hose clamp them used a broken bottle to sever the old hose and then just reattached the lot.
Then I got some water and refilled the radiator (but I couldnt fully refil it) so I left the cap off and drove a bit further. The car boiled again so I stopped again. I got more water and went again while I was driving some strange things happened all at once. 1. The speedo stopped reading 2. the car shifted from 4th gear to 3rd gear and would not go back to 4th 3. The car now seems to start off in second gear All of this while drive is selected. My trans is out of an EB for those that didnt know. So it seems to me that these issues relate to an electrical issue, but I dont know exactly what the issue is. I seem to remember a thread where this issue (or similar) was raised. Help please. |

Driving with the radiator cap off will decrease pressure and will lower the boiling point of the liquid in your radiator.

didn't the Eb auto have external solenoids, would say one got damaged and is in limp home mode

it would be stuck in 3rd gear.. it will only stay in 3rd even off the line..
my mates auto did this on him.. the auto is on its way out.. everytime it stuck in 3rd he took it on a long straight road and wound it right out, eventually it shifts to 4th and then works normally again for a bit.. he ended up having to put in a new trans.. maybe try change the oil or something? sorry to be the bearer of bad news not sure on the speedo though |

I will go and check out the wiring on the side of the trans (and that whole area) and see if it is anything obvious.

Got under the car and wiggled all of the wires on the side of the trans.
Car was now cool. Went for a drive and car is performing as well as it ever has and I now have a trans with 4 forward gears again. Thanks Roy |

Sounds like it went into limp home mode, the au's have the a fail safe cooling system to prevent cooking the engine which would also activate limp mode, so that you don't keep pushing the car and gives you the chance to pull over safely.
When the motor cools down it comes out of limp mode and back to normal.

Check the speedo drive gear (if that fails usually the speedo will fail and the car will stay in the gears you mentioned).
Another thing is to check the cluster connections.

Doesn't the AU auto use the radiator as a quasi oil cooler ... seeing as it overheated and boiled over ... the auto was doing the same thing ... hence going into limp home mode.

this happend to my car on my sisters wedding day, it was one of the wedding cars!
hose blew off the radiator somewhere and went into limp home mode, jumped into bunnings, got some pipe, fixed it, and it was fine. Good thing the limp home mode is!! |
