Default Falcon vs Commodore vs 380 vs Aurion vs Camry

I drive a lot of base model cars at work so I thought I would give my 2 cents and see what youz reckon.

Ford Falcon BF

Pros:
-Brilliant engine has bucketloads of torque, likes to get up and go, likes to rev and sounds awesome
-Transmission is awesome has the right gear ratios, doesnt clunk and has a proper manual mode
-Handling is precise and predictable
-Suspension absorbs bumbs and other road crap well
-ABS actually works on gravel road
-Fuel economy is pretty descent
-Throttle response is brilliant

Cons:
-Exterior is starting to look pretty bland
-Interior is too plasticky
-Steering feels heavy (the AU steering feels much better)

Holden Commodore VE

Pros:

-Its new so its something to talk about around the watercooler
-Handling is pretty good.
-Steering feel is pretty good
-Suspension setup pretty compliant
-Fuel economy an improvement
-Pretty roomy inside

Cons:

-In base model trim it is a really ugly car with chunks, hubcaps, side flutes all conspiring to make it look like a tarted up street skank.
-The engine lacks torque, doesnt like to rev and sounds wheezy and ****.
-The transmission is clunky and crap.
-Throttle response is still as crappy as VT
-The interior looks cheap and plasticky
-Quality is shithouse brand new cars shouldnt have problems.
-Sometimes I have to drive it.......

Mitsubishi 380

Pros:
-Engine is pretty sweet with plenty of torque and a nice sound
-Exterior styling pretty good for base model car
-Interior not as bad as rivals
-Ride pretty smooth

Cons:

-Steering not trustwothy
-Gearbox ok but could be better
-Dynamically being a big FWD you dont feel confident in it
-Just an average car with nothing to brag about

Toyota Camry

Pros:
-Looks pretty tough

Cons:
-Everything:seriously whats the big deal about this car a 4 cylinder might be all right in flat melbourne but when you have to go up a hill you get annoyed pretty quickly as the 4 struggles to move the fat ***** seriously I dont know why people dont buy a Mazda 6 instead

Toyota Aurion

Pros:

-Looks pretty tough
-Engine sounds pretty tough

Cons:

Where do I begin theres heaps so i will list a few biggies

-Torqueless engine sounds tough but lacks testicles
-That dicky gate shift and upside down manual mode
-That crappy Torana style foot operated park brake
-Cheap crappy interior
-Crashy skittery ride
-Stupid FWD dynamics: try chucking a U turn in a hurry

These are my opinions and maybe the up spec models are better but since probly 70% oz car sales are fleet it desrves some attention.

I'd buy a VE for sure. I hate Toyota. They look cheap and imported.

380's have no back head room. Bland interior, backside looks ugly.

Commodore for sure. I have nothing against them cars, but I have been brought up to be a ford supporter so I shall remain that way.

But yes, I would rather a locally built rwd car over a fwd import.

I chose the TOYOTA, because I wouldn't want to contribute to the GMH cash COW which would in turn probably fund a HSV Monster 7 litre V8 that FPV probably wouldn't match for years.......... :

I kinda prefer the look of the AURION anyways, it's a better balanced design in base model form. The Commie kinda looks funny with the big flares and cheese cutter wheels, and what's with the raised rear suspension on some........it adds to the already high rear waistline and makes it look like its constantly hard braking from 160 KLMH.

Is it me or are the results slightly skewed?

Damn sourbastard, you must have been voting for a while lol.

But seriously I would go the 380. The Magna was a good car so I assume the 380 would still be good too. But I wouldn't buy another base car of any model, especially a large car. They're only for company cars.

I don't think this thread will have a long life

Guys, dont say "VE" without having a look at one. My boss got a base model Omega last week and inside the thing is shocking. Its so uninteresting to look at. I couldn’t live with the thing.

I'll take the 380 thanks.

Driven the base model VE at work and I dont think theyre a spot on the Falcon.

If it was in the upper models, I might consider a Calais.

I said VE if i couldnt get a BF XT, but the VE has terrible seats and a horrible dash in the Omega, the BA /BF dash and seats are 1,000 miles ahead.

Id still rather a VE over those other piles of ****, sat ain a AURION when they first came out and its still got a grandma interior, nothings modern looking.

All depends on the spec of which car.

In terms of base model, I'd take the Aurion AT-X any day. Far easier on the eye.

Going up the range I'd have to go with the VE.. more power than the Aurion. If the Aurion could match VE's power in certain cars, I'd go with the Toyota product.

Engine sounds tough in a Aurion? You cant even hear it. Hell you bearly tell the difference between 2500rpm and 6500rpm, which makes manual shifting pointless. That might be good for when you heading down to the lawn bowls, but not if you're an enthusiast.

Ill agree on the sound of the 380 though, its the best of the lot. But still needs a decent exhaust. But the one I drove the paint on the shifter was scratching off like that of a instant lottery ticket. And yes, both it and the Aurion have the shifter the wrong way.

Out of the all the base model cars I would pick the Aurion without a doubt. 200kw and a 6spd auto anyday. FWD? I don't corner fast enough to notice hehe. The rest of the base models - falcon included are totally bland. If I had to pick a sports model it would be a different story...

Meh, bought me a Peugeot. It ain't base model though. Opposite end of the scale....

Edit: I probably should say that when the EL comes up for replacement, it'll probably be for another Falcon, or even a Territory. Hopefully they'll have a diesel model by then...

Out of those I've only driven the BF.

A comfortable car to drive with good steering and throttle response. For a N/A 6 the torque is very impressive.

I'm not a big fan of the BA/F interior. I find it quite bland and I don't like the idea of not being able to fit an aftermarket headunit considering the factory gear leaves a lot to be desired.

I prefer the exterior styling of the Commodore and Aurion, but they are the newest.

If the Aurion were rear wheel drive it would be a no brainer for me

actually changed my mind - id test out a 380 and see what sort of little mods i could do to it. like a late ford V8 and dual exhausts

Other comments on the Aurion

- Shitty auto-brake in the transmission drops the anchors everytime you take your foot of the gas. Arrgggghh.
- No trip computer, left behind by the Falcon/COmmodore
- Seats are about as supportive as wooden park benches
- Still not as roomy as a Falcon
- Yes 200kw's but boy you have to rev it. Day to day around the city a Falcon will pull harder and quicker due to its huge torque down low, unless you want to do 400rpm launches in the Aurion from traffice lights (in a Auto!!)
- Kicks down all the time on hills on the Hume, revs its head off. Not cool.
- As above, one of the shittiest interiors I have been in.
