i have made some mini ramps about 150mm high, enough to get to oil filter and sump plug, but low enough to fit under the front bar to drive up them

I picked up a trolley jack and stands for a lot less than $100 from my local auto one.

Careful with ramps with the deep front bar... they'll need to have a gentle gradient. Or be small as stated above.

I got 2 x rubber blocks 6" thick. Put them up against front tyres then drive up onto the blocks, presto now you can get a trolly jack underneath the front of your car to lift it up on the crossmember.

Buy some 5cm x 50cm square or round pavers and just drive the car ontop of them. That will give you enough room to slide underneath and change the oil.

i personally use a hoist at my work ....

but easiest way without buying something.... is to drive one side of the car onto the edge of the concrete gutter... that should give you enough clearance to get underneath and change the oil....

otherwise best is a jack and some jack stands

I think maybe you should get the mechanic to do it.
If you're not sure how to work axle stands or ramps, play it safe.

Sure the brick works, just make sure its a solid or as suggested a paver, I've also used a short piece of woodplank with a wedged end to drive up on.
Trouble with this and a paver is to make sure it doesn't slide when driving up onto it.
Good luck, remember safety first, don't want to hear you got squished.

Trolley jack then stands to hold the car up safely.

NEVER get under a car held up by a jack only - it's not designed to hold the car off the ground safely whilst you're under it !!

Funny this thread popped up, I just went out and purchased a trolly jack 4 stands and a couple of weel chocks all for $160.00 from Repco. I am doing a litlle more than an oil change to my BA GT though. But I will say that even lowered with a couple of suitably thick blocks as mention under the front weels does nicely for the oil change.

My House is on the side of a hill so getting mine up on ramps is easy as, plus I get the added bonus of having a perfectly level car once it is up on the ramps.

Dont use pavers, because they shatter in one go, hardwood is better because it dosent 'just explode' like pavers do.
I just drive onto ramps, XD's bar is rubber so i dont worry about the front bar

i use a 2500kg floor jack and a pair of axel stands under the chassis rails
i dont like the smaller narrow floor jacks because i have had one collapse and fall over with my XB on it. :

i have a sump guard as well so i need to be able to get under and remove it before i let the oil go.

i also rotate the tyres at the same time so with the front up on stands i can jack the back up and do the wheels while the oil is draining.

One ramp. I have a winged sump and I run the car up on one ramp so the wing with the sump plug in it is pointing down.

I have ramps for my AUs, but use two strips of metal plate (about 30cm x 20cm). If I didn't, the bar would scrape. The SR sedan has been lowered to XR height. Once up, there's heaps of clearance.

If you use cheapshit pathway pavers then yes they can break, but use proper driveway specific ones and they'd be fine.
