Default From a VL to an EA. I'm impressed!

I used to own a very tidy VL, I just recently purchased a ****box EA for $250 with 1 month of reg on it. The previous owner said he had just chucked a new exhaust and a new radiator in it a month or so ago.
Anyway, I am rather impressed with the old girl although she feels like I'm driving a tank. The steering is also a bit more touchy than I'm used to but other than, she goes bloody hard!
I have no idea what motor is in it or what series EA it is for that matter. She is a straight 6 however. I'm new to Fords so I don't know too much.
She chews alot of fuel, and I mean ALOT of fuel when I sink the right foot in. She misfires a fair bit. I do know she needs a good service.
If anyone can give me some tips on EA's it would be greatly appreciated.

Tip one is, are you sure it's a EA?
If it is it's 3.9lt. And it might also have a cracked head missing and eating petrol whats the water like the old owner might have replaced the radiator thinking it was leaking water when it might be eating it because of a head issue.

Maybe you could post a pic up?. If you can.

Blown heads will usually leak into the oil right? The oil is as black as can be, it would look like a chocolate milkshake if the head was blown

And it's an 89 model Iknow that for sure. I'm sure it's an EA, I juyst wanted to know if it was a series one or two

What colour is it?
Any new rims would look good on it something 17-18" Lowered suspension does the trick;).

It's white. Not too keen on 17's. They tend to get you pulled over more. I'm looking at 15's or 16's. What factory rims look good? Like I said I'm new to the Blue Oval crew

Depe4nding on how much tme and cash you have, there is heaps you can do to fix her up..

I'd start with a major service. If you want performance with better fuel consumption :- CAI, 5 speet conversion, extractors.

You will notice it will seriously become a better vehicle after this.

CFI or MPFI?

If CFI, an MPFI conversion would help your fuel consumption issues. As for Mags, look into EA-ED Turboblades. They look great on the squarer models, like the EA. They were off the EA Ghia, and then the EBII-ED Fairmont.

Series 1 EA's had 3 engine configerations, if i am right, please coreect me if i am wrong
1./ 3.3 lt Carby motor
2./ 3.9 lt Carb Motor
3./ 3.9 lt Multi Point EFI motor

Big difference in power and fuel consumption in all 3 variations
1988 was a long time ago, so going by memory here

Could be 3.2lt, but highly unlikely

My mate has a VS Acclaim and he came with me last week to pick up my father inlaws EA.
Needless to say, after 1000k's he has fell in love with how well the Ford holds the road and is considering buying it cos its so much better to drive than the Commonwh0re.
I guess they aint the best Ford produced, but apparently better than an irs equipped VS

Turbo blades are a nice looking factory rim.

As for fuel consumption, anything from the thermostat being shagged, plugs, leads, oxy sensors often fail etc.

It's good to know such a "lemon" model has had such an effect :P

No EAs had a carb motor. It looks like a carb, but it is actually injected. There's two injectors in the throttle body. It's a pretty crap design and the MPI configuration beats it in every respect.

they were throttle body injected instead of the multi point injection

However, i am right about the 3.3 lt motor, am i not?

its actually a 3.2 and was dropped pretty much straight away, very few of them around.

Correct.
The 3 choices were;
3.2 single point (throttle body) injection
3.9 single point (throttle body) injection
3.9 multi point injection

My old man got an EA S-pack wagon with the 3.9 MPFI when they were first released (he missed out on the 4 speed auto upgrade though, that was S2).

I learnt to drive in that thing and at the time I thought it went pretty hard after his XF 4.1 carb motor that he traded in.

Thanks for the response guys! She does have the 2 injectors in the carb. I'm going to open her up tomorrow arvo when I get paid. What tell tale sighns are there to tell me if it is a 3.9 or not?

I'm pretty sure it's stamp on the side, of the engine block, just under the head.

That's how we identified, my mate's old EA wagon.

I know this is slightly going off topic, but are the early 90s Ford Lasers the same too?

I've always wondered if mum's Laser was injected or carby, because of the carby like filter cover.

The engine code is D
Trans code is B
Model number is 18733
The only option code on the plate is 36
Can somebody decipher the codes for me?

It is fuel injected because it has the 2 electronic thingies in the carb!

Well we sold the VL to buy a pos Nimbus. Bought the EA to get to work

Sorry was thinking my brothers harbour just bought a White ford the other day real cheap and was having similar problems with his and he wasn't sure what it was no badges etc.
