Default AUII VCT Question

Should there be excessive amounts of oil in the plug that attaches to the VCT? (See attached picture)

If there shouldn't be any oil, what would be the possible problem and solution.

It's just that I had to remove the plactic cover behind it the other day to replace the belt and found that there was oil in the plug.

Thanks

there shouldnt be oil in there as it looks like a sensor or reader of some sort. try giving that engine a clean and see if it comes back, it might just be an accumulation of dirt.

Umm, thats the VCT mechanism. Its an oil pressure based system.

Exactly where is the oil? There is an electrical switch that goes to that (the mechanism is triggered electrically) that then causes oil pressure to change the VCT mechanism. Where you are finding the oil is very important as it is supposed to be there in a part of that.
It certainly shouldnt be leaking though

When I take the switch off the VCT mechanism, there is oil in that switch where the wires are. I hope that makes sense.

From what you describe , there should not be oil near that wiring. Is it possible that oil was spilt down there?

It's the first time that I have had a reason to remove it.

My advice would be to clean up what you can and see if it comes back.....

something is leaking in. I'm guessing a seal in the unit somewhere. Bad is, in this case, something you should attend to fairly soon. The oil in the vct system is presurised and, if it is leaking, you may get a MAJOR issue with oil loss in the near future.. or it might stay like that for the next 10 years. Impossible to tell but worth investigating.
I'm only guessing here as I havent actually see how much oil or exactly where.

Play nicely.
The reason a clean engine bay is good is you can immediatly see where any leaks are occuring.. and it looks good.
