Default ACT to ban all new ICE car sales

well and so the first Australian state to ban the sale of new ICE vehicles is ..... the ACT !

https://www.news.com.au/technology/m...6fb0a77f2ea04b

so how long do we think it will be before all the remaining states follow suit? or the federal government?

They will probably follow Commiefornia in the ban from most out of state trucking companies to deliver to them. Wonder what they'll eat.

They'll have no trouble implementing here, everyone is rich. All i see on the roads are new Teslas, new rangers, 300 series land cruisers, 76 series landcruisers, BMW x5's, Mercedes etc. The poor will continue to drive our falcons and commodores that are easy to maintain.

Yeah and Franco's going to be a changed man in 2035

Thats the best thing about making grandiose statements years out from what they're going to occur when you have 3 year election cycles, its someone elses problem, or you can backflip on it real easy close to the date for X/Y/Z reason - you can say what ever you want when its 13 years and 4 elections away.

Its the same with how the EU turns around and suddenly declares nuclear power and natural gas as 'green fuels' so they can make investments into these areas where as previously they couldn't, yesterday natural gas was a nasty fossil fuel needed to be eliminated and today its part of the green revolution

Australian population to ban politicians by 2034 would be the best proposal.

What happens if someone develops a bolt on Hydrogen/carbon converter (carbie) and ICE are only outputting steam. Will the big money allow a cleaner fuel? Imagine the hassle to get it allowed for use when it has been banned?

I wonder if there will be a huge boom in sales after 2030 so everyone can buy their last ICE car to get them through the next decade or so.

Perhaps we will have so many great, affordable electric cars by then that almost everyone will already own an electric car by 2035?

I feel like we're the modern day equivalent of Valiant fans, as far as they're concerned cars turned to **** after the death of the 265 Hemi

Same with me in a post Falcon/Commodore world, cars turned to **** after the year 2016 where it was 1981 for the Valiant people.

This is what I didn't understand with LNP. ScoMo could've agreed to the 2050 agreement and not had to worry about it. Its so far away. Most of the LNP would be dead or on life support by then anyway. Just agree to the damn thing and move on. See what comes of it by then. Like you mentioned, Gas is now suddenly "Green". Who knows, coal might be green by then given the need to generate electricity to run Electric cars.

This thought is exactly why we had such a big boom in used car sales especially old Holdens and Fords over the last couple of years.

Yeah, the stupid morons will, in 2036, proclaim it a success as they can drive from border to border across their state, on one charge, and get home again.

"We sharll pars a lore, forbidding such horibile forsile fueled automobiles existing in orl of Ootraliar, from 2037. Surely thoose peasarnts in Queenslarnd or, goodness, even Westorn Oostraliar can do it."

Go for it. I'll laugh while cosy in my nursing home, if I live past 80 odd.

I've had money to buy a new car outright since I turned 21, i'm now mid 30's. The most i've ever paid for a car is $26500 and that was, at the time, 18 months old fully loaded FG XR6 Turbo. I honestly can't ever see myself buying a new car in my life.

I mean, my daily is a $2000 crap box, sure it guzzles fuel but it doesn't depreciate, is reliable and upkeep costs nothing.

I've bought two, then on the second one, chopped both front tyres before 19,000km, then voided the warranty by 20,000km when I modified it.

No more new cars for me either

How do you go not keeping up with the joneses? I'm not one for caring about what others think but I also don't have a significant other I enjoy 'extra curricular activities' with either so I don't think I count on the 'keeping up with the joneses' scale like others have to

My daily is my bike (i choose to, i could buy a daily if needed)
Only car ive paid cash for is what i have now.
I wont be buying another new car again (bought 2) ill leave that to the missus.
All the cars i enjoy are now longer available new so im out from now on also.

Im not close enough to the whole EV thing, but i wonder how long it is until the costs of owning an ICE car become too much and they become a proper weekend only thing.

What I don't understand about all this is that the arguments are well that's the way manufacturers are going, they will be cheaper, the infrastructure will get better etc.

If that's the case, then why the need to legislate it?

On top of this they are moving from a weight based rego system to an emissions one. Emissions make **** all difference to road wear and EVs have heavy battery packs

Sure maybe have rebates instead for EVs but you shouldn't have to if they are so great in their own right.

Anyway what do you expect from the ACT. Same people praising this are probably those that also whinge about the cost of houses and rent around here

Coal - of the earth
Power your life on the sustenance of mother earth.
From the soil,
A green future
With brown coal.

Read that and weep, marketers.

Edit: say it in a James Earl Jones voice

It sure has it's advantages. Gave up on the Joneses long ago ourselves, swapped for snow and surf time with the old AWD getting us there.

Not to get into it but powered by coal is still a lot cleaner than diesel and petrol.

You forget solar. I do most my charging now off solar. Sure, not everyone has solar but many also do.

Actually, little data point - we got our updated power rates, and it was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting 100% increases with all the hoo ha of all the gas and grid issues ("We'll be green in 2030" "What do we do in the meantime?" "Dunno")

Saw price increases, but 4 to 6 % on the peak/offpeak.

We are solar, with deal through large renewable hydro provider, so perhaps that's why.

We had a little bit of price decrease lately.

But that was only after being locked in hard and overpaying for the leccy for a long time in the contracts

Nice big nuclear power station sited on the Carillion island might wake them up to reality.

Just an FYI all of ACTs electricity is from renewable sources.

Not that I agree with it, but luckily I live just across the border.

Scratch that.....https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-10-...ble%20sources.

So its all about buying carbon credits. Funny how you can buy how "green" you want to be.
