Default Spyder = Convertible ???

Recently I have seen a convertible Ferrari and convertible Alfa Romeo named 'Spyder'.

Is someone able to explain how a 'Spyder' = convertible?

Traditionally a Spyder was similar to a roadster (a 2 seater) but with less weather protection.

Nowadays due to over use by marketing departments it simply means a convertible and can be either a 2 or 4 seater.

Here is some info I have found however I am not sure wether or not it is correct;

" Supposedly they were called spyders because the soft top was supported by 4 metal beams on each side of the carriage, so 8 legs like a spider. Here is a pic of one with 5 supporting beams on each side: http://www.visualphotos.com/photo/2x...ge_1780884.jpg "

Full page can be found here;

I think it depends on the marque as to what they call their convertible my Lotus is sold and referred to as a roadster it has a hard top and a removable canvas soft top same as a spyder or convertible all mean the same canvas top comes off.....
