Default Fuel tank flush before new fuel filter?

It's been a quite a few years since my fuel filter has been replaced, so I plan to do so soon.

However, I am curious to now whether it would be wise to flush the fuel tank and clear out the sediment, let it settle for a week or so, and then replace the filter.

Is this a good idea or will I just guarantee that my new filter will be choked up from early in its life?

Also, how easy is it to clean out the tank? Is it for the amateur? What are the risks?

if it`s been running ok Pete , i think i would leave the tank alone(just my opinion), perhaps check the contents of the old filter to see what comes out, cut it open if your really keen, i don`t think it`s too hard to do a tank clean as long as you remember that petrol fumes are more explosive than petrol itself and the car is secure and not going to fall on you,
last time i did it on a car years ago i hosed the tank out, shook it around to get the drips out then sloshed a bottle of metho around in the tank,
stood it up inlet down to let it drain, i went and had smoko then reinstalled it.
i think whoosha did a post on how to remove the sender if you decide to go ahead with it.

Thanks mik, that's very helpful. The car has been running OK so I will let sleeping bogs lie. I can always do it another time if needed, and your how-to details will be helpful.
With thanks ....
