Dont really follow what you mean?

You work at a hospital in QLD and your worried they are going to close it down?
Or your worried they are closing down hosptials in WA?

If your in QLD you must have missed quite a lot.... Its been in the papers and media since the election.

As the new government is sacking all casual Hospital staff, including all those on a contract. This includes nurses, cleaners, admin staff etc...

There is no talk of any closeures, however small hospitals will suffer due to lack of full time staff so they may be forced to close.

Not sure about hospitals. Can't remember any getting closed but there have been a few doctors surgeries that have disappeared over the last few years.

Hospitals are state owned and run... what happens in one state has no bearing on the other.

I work in a WA hospital.

The govt is telling us the following;
- no hospital closures
- outsourcing of non-clinical services to private sector
- Fiona Stanley hospital up and running in 2014
- Rockingham, Swan Districts, Joondalup and Armadale hospitals in process of upgrading to 'general' hospitals with increased specialist services so as to relieve the load on Royal Perth, Charles Gairdner and Fremantle

What we hear on the inside:
- partial closures of FH and RPH in 2014 as services transfer to Fiona Stanley
- Money for general hospital upgrades already spent
- Fiona stanley not likely to be fully operational in 2014

What we experience;
- Bed status red or black (ie. few or no beds available) daily
- Ambulance ramping times at ED's going up and up
- bureaucratic pressure to discharge patients to make statistics look good
- financial incentives to do the above
- hostility when we refuse to comply because our patients are not ready for discharge

If it was just a job i would be out but health is my career and I don't work for govts. I work for my patients who deserve first world health care and have paid to receive it!

The biggest problem with public hospitals is that they are run by doctors, mostly surgeons. They stick together and are an establishment and old boys club. They scapegoat the weak when the minister is looking, and they have vested interests. Just like major political parties. Until the structure changes, the status quo will endure.

Australian doctors do a brilliant job when they are hands on with patients - second to none in the world, but as far as running hospitals go, they are part of the problem, not the solution. Nobody is worth $4000 per hour. Nobody.

On the topic of closures and privatisation, Joondalup is run under contract by a private operator for the WA government (can't remember whether it's Ramsay or Healthscope). There are a number of hospitals around the country in a similar situation. Mildura hospital in Victoria for example. The contractors by their nature are 'for profit' so you can read in to that what you will. They don't run these hospital for free, but closure is not an option.
