Default Car roadworthy and imports

Hey all.

Im currently studying a double degree of mechanical and automotive engineering. Ive been looking at importing a late 60's camaro or mustang from america. I want to restore a car and I want to do most of it myself which is where the problem is.

Ive been told that all work has to be engineer certified to get it roadworthy, would my degrees cover this criteria or is there a special course that must be completed?

i think you'll be find doing the work as long as you speak to a certified engineer along the way who ultimately will certify your build.... best to ask a pro!

Depending on the state you are in you will need it "engineered" to meet ADRs for whatever year it was manufactured. ADRs didn t kick in until 1969 so if you buy a Camaro or Stang built before that you dont need it engineered.

If you persist in buying something later, (in Victoria at least) a VASS certificate can only be provided by a VicRoads approved engineer, so I doubt you can write it yourself without specialized courses and getting vicroads certification?

What would you need to get engineered if you are just restoring it?

VicRoads and the engineer I took my 1974 AMC Javelin to for a VASS certificate.

This is LHD rego; Javelin had to comply to ADRs up to June'74 (I think .. when it was built). Needed to modify headlights (obviously), rear indicators, seatbelts, rear numberplate light, etc. It was stock and already had all emissions gear including EGR, side intrusion bars, etc, etc ..

Umm, your doing a degree and being taught by real live Engineers and your asking US what to do !!

Hi
I have a 1972 Mustang convertible
which has been changed to RHD
using XB Falcon fire wall and steering parts
I have to get mine certified by an engineer
to do that I had to have
the headlights changed to OZ ones (dip to the left)
seatbelts done
static 3 point belts in the back
and inertia 3 point belts in the front
they had to be brand new belts
the mechanical work all sailed through OK
if you leave it LHD
just the belts and lights need to be done
plus your normal RWC conditions
theres probably more but thats how mine turned out
also for cheaper rego for 30 year old or more car
you join a club
and have you car signed off (dated)

NSW you have to be registered/certified with RMS (roads and maritime services - what a dick name :P ).

Going into 3rd year and begining to realize the lecturers have been out of the industry for a long time :P they don't know a lot about this stuff

I think you will find most engineers wouldn't self certify anyway. consult an engineer and have him follow your progress through your build if your mod will require this.
