Hey guys, im about to buy new ignition leads and am not sure whether 8mm are fine or if its better to get 9mm leads, is there a noticeable benefit?

i was told its only the insulation that thicker, so not worth the extra dough. i used standard leads in my AU xr6 ute which ran fine for 2 yrs. made 140rwkw with standard leads

9mm is good. Longevity and spark transfer are the primary needs for leads, and 9mm's in a good brand (esp Queensland Ignition Leads) are king.

Apparently one of the best you can buy. Never tried them on the AU. Was going to but ended up selling it.

QIL leads FTW. Around $90 delivered in any colour you want

When I rang up to order mine, he asked if I could do pick up, and I said yes. I asked how long before I could pick them up and he replied "Im a bit busy can you give me an hour", lol.
He makes everything to order, so they are pretty much ready in half an hour usually.

some years ago there was an in depth article in one of the hot rod mags about ignition parts, including leads, the results were somewhat surprising, the cheaper factory leads got a big thumbs up.

instead of posting a new thread i'll just add to this one..

just wondering if the leads should be replaced after a certain length of time or k's? or is it just a case of waiting for the ones on the car to start playing up and misfiring?

the car is due for a service and the leads are probably 2 years old now, just wondering if i should add them to the list of things to buy.

Don't care what anyone else has to say on this subject. Only use genuine leads on EA to AU, or suffer the consequences. Esspesially when running LPG. Now i'll sit back and watch others argue with the voice of experience. Later.......

i have "scorcher premium" on at the moment, but im gonna replace my factory coilpacks so figure ill do leads n hopefully have no hesistation..

so what would you guys recommend. i dont need to **** off to a brand. i jus want good quality stuff.

also for coilpacks, theres "standard" on ebay, or i can pay near double for MSD... anyone know anything about this standard brand (personal experiance pref, ta).

I have the opportunity to buy some Eagle leads, Product code E9865 "Ford windsor, around rocker cover 90deg 289-302W". I have emailed eagle but got no response, does anyone know if these will fit either an XR8 or a TS50? thanks

Ive just done an upgrade on my t3 with msd 8241 coils and msd leads last week. The verdict is still out at the moment because i think i have a spark plug issue.

coils were 175each and 200 for leads.

Another vote for QIL. Given they're about 15 mins from my place it was all very convenient.
Do lots of long, hot miles and no probs as yet.

I have a question, is the thickness of a lead better for high heat areas/applications? i.e. turbo/supercharged under bonnet temps?

I currently have 8mm leads but always wondered if going 9 or 10mm would be better or will help insulate against the amount of heat the headers give off after a hard run.

I have had a set of QIL on my other T3 and they were fine. I emailed him last week and he quoted 190 for a set. So 200 didn't bother me for msd. Both are hand made to the exact length and have different spark boots fitted to suit the factory set. QIL used the factory spark boots and sheilds last time I had them done.

The xr8 dropped onto 7 with a dud factory lead so it got the T3 hand me downs.
Autobarn wanted 210 for Top Gun leads.

top gun leads arent that good even... sheesh. im gonna go into ignition lead fabrication ! retirement village, here i come..

so maybe ill get MSD coils (even though they are double the cost of standards, roughly) amd leads..

and i just spent 160 on iridiums... so thats.. around 750 dollars to put a spark in a chamber... awesome.

Topgun leads caused crossfire on top of the rocker cover after about 30000km

, I have now been using STEEL champion leads same as Jim Mock provides on his DEV kits. $60 you can't go wrong........

Has anyone ordered any leads from Greg (ex Queensland Ignition Leads) lately? I ordered mine three weeks ago. Arrived today and they appear to be Top Gun pro racing series leads with the Top Gun part on the lead scrubbed off....??

I was under the impression these were his own?

Mine didnt, that's what it cost me for a fitted set over at QIL when he had his shop. AU XR8.

From memory a set of topguns I bought a few years ago didn't cost that much less, they fell apart after 40k, so unless leads have dramatically come down in the last 12 months or so $200 for QIL sounds about right.

Either way they are a top quality product and worth it in my opinion. You get what you pay for.

Wouldn't be too impressed if they are. I need some for my AU and was looking at MSD's made by A1 High Performance in WA (I dont know of anybody else that does them?) and was quoted $220 plus freight. Still trying to justify that one.

Never again shall I use TopGun leads - utter crap they are.

I can understand that after seeing your post.

I got mine about a year ago, he made them up while I waited, watched him and they certainly werent top guns. Excellent quality and performance with them. Nil issues so far.

Interested to hear any follow up to this as he had an excellent reputation.
