Can someone please explain what these are? i thought i got a hole in my cat but... heres my post frm the other page
ok... well apparently its my 'idle bearings' i was told at the exhaust place. we got under the car on the hoist with it on and i can 100% say that its not the exhaust making the noise, they thougt it might be the fuel pump or the bearings but after they heard the noise coming frm under the bonnet they seem to be sure its the idle bearings does this sound right? ive had a noise from under my bonnet for some time and i always thought it was just the fan belt or something but they reckon the idle bearings are wearing, they said theyre about $40 each for a replacement anyways any information you guys can give me would be much appreciated

its not a squeaky sound its just very noisy and sounds like an exhaust leak... but its not it does sound like worn bearings spinning

If its from the front of your motor it could be one of the tension idlers its the wheel thing that the belt runs around, they make a metalic growling type noise when stuffed .. I assume the car in question is a auto not a manual ?

yeh its an auto.... the noise comes from the front towards the left, the opposite side to where the cat is and a bit closer to the front of the car

oh i forgot, i originally thought the noise was the fan belt so that sort of backs it up too... so this would be making the noise under the car as well? they reckon its the one noise
i just wanna get a few opinions before i let someone fix my car because i dont fully understand i dont think they would rip me off but just making sure

They'd be talking about idler bearings. They are the bearings in the tensioner pulleys allowing the drive belt to wriggle it's way around the engine components.

Take the belt off and run it for a couple of minutes see if the noise is still there...... also you will be able to spin them by hand and see / hear if they ok or not

They should be virtually silent if in good condition.

thanks for the info guys youve all been really helpful!
my dad is adamant its a hole in the exhaust... would the bearings sound louder under heavier acceleration? might be a stupid question but better to ask than assume!

If its a hole, open your car door when you turn off the car, if it sounds like its "puffing" when it dies, it is probably your exhaust.

You could slice off a couple of feet of garden hose, cup it to your ear, and while the car is running, point the other end of the hose around the engine bay and exhaust to see if you can hear the source of the noise.
This method has helped me diagnose a few things before. Good luck with it. Dave
