Default Mini (BMW) overheating?

Hey all

Its an R52 cabrio, Dec06 build. It starts to climb in coolant temp at standstill, and has a thermo fan that now runs after you shut the car off, sometimes for a fair while. This started last Tuesday. This NEVER happened before, even on the day I was driving it around earlier in the year when I took a photo of the temp display in the dash showing 45.5 etc. Still runs fine when in flowing traffic, but at a stand still she creeps up in coolant temp.

I have done some forum searching in Mini forums etc and have a few answers, but wondering if anyone here has any experiences before I take it back to the dealer on Tuesday. I have seen a few people here with Mini's so any experiences welcome.

Forums overseas etc reckon it is a common problem with the thermostat in 05-06 build Coopers (sticking maybe). So I will mention this when it goes in on Tuesday. Anyone have any experiences with this?

I am a bit devo'd as I love the Mini, but also have the dirts because my old man borrowed the 'lane today and my brother rang telling me that some carwash mob has wrecked the mickey paint. How on earth they managed that I have no idea, but he washed it 3 times trying to get the marks out because they know how much I love the 'lane (we all do) and that I will go off my nut, but still can't get the marks off. Heads will be rolling on that front, that's for sure (at the carwash).

Any thoughts on the Mini? It's actually a daily driver so hopefully its not off the road that long.

Not having a good car weekend! :

Is the the Thermo fan running at idle? Should be kicking in before you notice a move on the thermo dial.

It was a leaking thermostat housing. That was the known issue identified by some overseas forums. The high speed thermo fans must have recognised a slight elevation in normal coolant temp and then ran the thermo's, even after stopping, just to be safe.

All fixed now under warranty with a free radiator flush, coffee and friand this morning and a 125 coupe for the day.

No trouble at all really...

That what I love about mini, if it is warranty work you get a loan car without having to fight for it. Good to hear it was fixed.

Did my apprenticeship on mini's in the '60's, some of my stories would make the ITALIAN JOB or any mini chase pale into insignifignce
