Just heard on the radio (in Victoria) that if you do not pay your traffic fines they will not allow you to re-register your car, what do you guys think of this turn of events?

Please don't nuke this one.

If you are a bogan....Buy car for $500 with 12 months rego, rack up a heap of fines, do big skids in front of police just before rego runs out - free car parking from the anti-hooning legislation, and they will dispose of the wreck when you don't pick it up.

Seriously - pay the fines, no problem.

But i can see plenty more people driving unregistered vehicles, but it is unlikely they will care. I t will just add to the unlicensed drivers.

You can't also legally sell or dispose of the car either ........ What this means?

Big increase on the number of unregistered and more importantly uninsured cars running around. Pity one hits you, its bad enough now with how many dont have 3rd party or un lisenced and un registered.

There are 100's of millions in $$$ waiting to be collected. Thats alot of fines and alot of unregistered cars! Some will pay but most wont care.

Same in NSW. Can't rego your car OR renew your licence til outstanding fines have been paid.

Actually it is one step further, in that your rego is cancelled and your driver's license is cancelled

This is the way it should be.

Wonder how many people would 'forget' to pay things like council bills, fines and taxes if the government enforced laws that took the money (plus interest) directly from government benefits etc after x months...

Bit like the trendy Uni students who think they can dodge the Library fines... The dumb looks on their faces when they learn they will not graduate without paying all outstanding money is golden. The money is all of a sudden found to pay...

Why dont they throw into the same basket if you have not got THIRD PARTY ONLY PROPERTY DAMAGE motor insurance you cant re-register you car.

That would decrease Motor Insurance Premiums for all who are insured as if every car is insured on the roads then the insurers would not have to pay out on huge loss's without any recovery.

Thus giving the insurers a larger premium pool and less loss's reducing insurers costs which flow on to reduce insurance premiums for the customer

ANYWAY its easy enough for Police these days to put a rego of a car in their computer and see if its registered or not

I had 3 fines from 1997 get delivered via a sheriff back in 2004....7 years after the offense had happened, disputed them and then got tied up in court for another 20 months, until Victorian police tracked him down (the guy I sold the bike to didn't re register it in his name).

What if you have a dispute with a fine like I did with these once they showed up (the guy I sold the bike to didn't re register it in his name) or some thing like that, now tell me situations like this will not stuff up the system, if you have a dispute and have it tied up in court will they still allow you to register your car or renew your license ?

If you are disputing the fine it shouldnt impact the rego..
3rd party insurance should be compulsory too...

When you both fill out the registration transfer form at the time of sale, keep your copy. This would show who it was sold to, their licence number, address and date of sale. All the evidence you need to solve the dispute.

Not hard to get around, if buying a new car just register it in the wifes or a relatives name.

following on with what bossxr8 has said here.. wat if all of your cars are registered in 1 persons name. all 3 of our cars are in 1 name as insurance works out better. if the 1 owner of all 3 cars doesnt pay a fine that would find all 3 people off the road...

It has been like this in SA for years. I agree with it to a certain extent but it should be limited to traffic offences only.

Someone thought that they could open my gates and let my dogs out so that they could get into my back yard. The pup ran off but the old stayed and protected her property as she should. Dog catcher caught the pup and slapped me with a fine which I refused to pay due to the circumstances in which my normally secured dog was released, 6 months later I go to re register my car to be told that I am suspended from carrying out any business until I pay my fine.

I get royally done over 3 times for being the Victim of a crime, I had to buy a new $80 padlock to replace the one that had been cut, end up paying overinflated fine of $220 and then miss out on 2 days wages while I try to sort all this crap out so that I have a registered vehicle to drive to work.

While I am on a rant...... Compulsory third party insurance........ I pay for fully comprehensive insurance on every single one of my vehicles. As I have a contract to prove my insurance is paid up for a 12 month period why the hell should I have to pay the Governments chosen company more money to cover me for something I am already covered against. My fully comp covers me for way more than CTP yet it costs me less than the CTP charge does on my V8 vehicles.

I don't know about other states but if you don't pay fines in QLD it goes to SPUR. And they'll sieze your assets if you don't pay.

OK now you guys have had a chat, heres the problems I see with it :

the increase of unregistered uninsured cars on the road (more to bang into the rest of us), and what do they do for driving an unregistered vehicle, they fine you, then what you can't regist.... oh no wait they already did that.

compulsory third party insurance is a brilliant idea I have had accidents with people uninsured and unemployed, I will never see the money it cost me in damages, this type of thing will become more prevalent.

On the subject of fines anybody noticed the level they are set at is a little lower than the cost of disputing them, so its a bit cheaper to just pay the fine. When they hand fines out like confetti (camera car @ the bottom of a hill on the highway) and the people that get nabbed feel its a hip pocket pinch and don't want to pay. It is the powers that be ensuring they can pull these cash grabs, and eventually we have to pay, otherwise no rego and insurance etc.......

In my eyes this is a big problem, if the community at large believed that they weren't just extorting money from us, then maybe we would be more happy to payup.

Thumbs down Fines /Rego/Jail

Hi Some 25 years back I got an overloading fine in My bosses truck as this is in QLD the fine goes to the driver even though the boss makes the extra money for the extra freight anyway following arguments over work conditions I got put off long story short 2 months later the cops knocked on my door looking for $600 or the "body" I didnt have the cash so I ended up doing 5 days in the copshop that doesnt happen any more they worked out its cheaper to garnish your wages
thats my rant Thanks John

and if Vic expands the plan to match NSW then apart from rego being cancelled the owner's drivers license is also cancelled. No good buying a car in the wife's name if your license is cancelled.

The problem with it is when you have company cars and one of the employees has a fine that he needs to pay and even after reminders, has forgotton to do so. If you front up to re register any company vehicle they will not allow it - they are quite happy that you run the risk of having another unregistered / uninsured vehicle on the road - this to me is blackmail and is typical of the RTA in NSW which is a law unto itself. In our case we had to pay for the fine and then take it from the guys salary, but this took a few days to filter through the State Recovery Office and we ran the risk of having an accident in the ute that could not be registered.

I despise the RTA with a passion, some of their rules and procedures are nothing short of ludicrous - I know of one case where a thriving business was killed almost overnight by there stupidity. Thankfully it is in the hands of the court and if they lose (very likely) they will pay a motza!!

how is that possible.. if the driver gets a TIN it is in his name and reminders sent to him. The fact he is driving a company car has nothing to do with it and failure to pay will result in the driver's license and driver's vehicles rego's to be cancelled. no affect on the company car at all.

if it is a speed camera or parking fine, then the reminders goto the company and it is upto the company to deal with. Once the company does a stat dec and nominates the emplyee as the driver, no further responsability rests with the company.
