Default Crossing to the dark side...

No, i'm not about to go out and buy a Calais over a G6ET, but am about to take posession of what, on initial sighting, is a pretty much mint condition HQ Kingswood.

The old girl isn't going to know what hit her when I'm finished (which I'm planning will be a long time, but anyway...)

It's silver with a 202. Soon to be blue with a 253

HQ, my favourite car before the G6eT. What would be awesome, would be a HQ, with f6 driveline and powerplant, and a Rolls Royce interior. But leave the outside Kingswood style.

Why putting a lamo 253 in her? Just keep it stock - far cooler these days.

I had a 253 Kingy and I loved it but if I was planning a project, it'd be a 308 or a 350. Any reason you chose a 253?

I agree stock, or at least go a 308/350

My first car was a HG Kingswood, the best think about it was Ted Bullpit had one

Edit: You could always go Jap spec and drop a rotary in.

Nice work, to be honest a nice HQ wagon has got to be one of my favorite cars. but I have to join the rest of the thread and say why the hell a useless 253 instead of something decent?

I agree totally ..... both with the thong sound and either stick to the 202 or go all the way ....... not 1/2 arsed!

There is an XB panelvan in Mulberry getting around at the moment with a 250 ..... It looks amazing and the amount of wow's it got for having the 6 surprised me but its mint!

HQ's aren't too bad at all and is my pick of the classic Holdens in both 4 and 2 door varients ...... pics please!

It's the only Holden worthy of sitting in a Ford lover's garage IMO!

I remember taking the new HQ to the drive-in. It was preorded and one of the first released in WA. The blokes were all over it like a rash, their girls weren't impressed.

quit ya hating on 253. They're a decent motor for budget builds and let's face it.. Who doesn't do 350/308 nowadays? Everybody. That's who. Go the 253 mate and goodluck!

I may of said I like them, but that still doesn't make them worthy of the garage!

love the sound of the 253 . mate you can fang those things on the road , and get the sound of heaven ( v8 supercar plus) and still get whipped by the hyundi GETZ in the next lane, so you can have a v8 and keep your licence . i simply love that aspect of the 253 . and i'm, not kidding . good luck.

Thanks for the feedback / comments guys.

My blood runs blue but this things is sweet. Totally original and straight as. Kept under a carport and owned since new by this one guy who used to work at GMH.

I'll post pics as soon as I get my hands on her - prob in the next couple of weeks.

I'm leaning toward the 253 cos I want something that chews a little less gas than the 5 litre, as well as the whole licence issue. I may still go a 308 (it'll probably be easier to find one in the front of something in decent nick and parts will be far easier to find), but definitely not the 350 - there's no point given that it'll only be a weekend driver anyway.

The thing isn't going to be a traffic light racer or a quarter miler, just a nice cruiser.

The aim will be detail detail detail. I don't want the quickest or the loudest but I do want it to be as close to perfect detail wise as possible.

If it's only a weekend driver, don't worry about fuel consumption (so much) and get something that doesn't lose all its energy output in sound production...

I had a 253 4sp HQ Kingswood back in the day and it was a beast and a joy to drive. I tried to kill a 253 the night before it was due to be pulled out and rebuilt but just abusing it shamefully and holding it wide open in first gear at one point. Apart from the noise making me cringe it did nothing and I gave up after about 5 minutes through boredom and took it bushbashing instead. That car took more abuse that night than any vehicle I've ever had and it just shrugged it off and kept going without missing a beat. I'd take a 253 over a 308 any day of the week, you just can't kill 'em with a stick. Put a 253 next to a 308 and floor both and see which one goes bang first. I bet the pilot of humble 253 drives his car home laughing at the dead 308.

AHH the memories.......

In my experience a 253 wont use much if any less fuel than a 308, a 308 built with late model vn heads on it would be my pick, built mild it would be very efficient and use less fuel that the 253, while still being a very capable V8 street engine, if you ever felt like giving it a bit of stick..
