Default Ford kills Boss engine for F-150, Mustang

The powerful V8 engine was slated to appear on models ranging from the new Mustang to the best-selling F-150 and Super Dudy, but a stop work order has narrowed the Boss' available engine bays down to one model. Ford President of the Americas Mark Fields told Levine that while the program isn't being killed completely, it will now only appear on the Super Duty. Ford has already spent a load of cash on the beefy pushrod, so killing the program altogether would have been a tough pill to swallow, and Super Duty buyers expect V8 power anyway. Ford was also planning on more than one displacement for the Boss, but with it now only going in the Super Duty, it'll likely only appear in 6.2-liter guise.

Ford will likely move any and all monetary and development resources possible away from the Boss, and into the hands of greener projects like the US-bound Fiesta. The move makes abundant sense given the current realities Ford is facing, but it still saddens us that we won't get to mash the pedal to unleash 400 naturally aspirated ponies any time soon.

It mentions the Boss as a beefy pushrod, yet its overhead cam??

Times are changing to a degree, but its good to see whats coming up next as more than likely we'll be seeing it over here.

I wonder if ford engineers each have their own psychiatrist on hand. They would need it just about every day of the week.

Mon: paycut
Tues: fav project axed, moved to fiesta efficiency dept.
Wed: concept images leaked
Thurs: told by your overpaid manager to ask permission each time you need a pencil.

The American 'Boss' Motor is 5.4l pushrod, the aussie 'boss' motor is the double overhead cam model

I believe it is chief, from memory they renamed it BOSS after hurricane Katrina. What a pity! With the I6T gone, and this gone, is the only performance engine the twinforce/ecoboost? Or are ford planning to continue the Boss, as it is known in Australia (i.e. current v8 we have now)?

The 5.4L is not a pushrod in the US, it has a chain driven OHC with 3 valves per cylinder, 2 on the old one. The 4.6 Mustang and old Navigator 5.4 had quad-cam 4v heads, which the XR8 and GT use. I think many people prefer the better efficiency of the 3 valve head though.

The new pushrod motor was going to be 6.2 ish litres.

For the second time in this thread, the 6.2 is not a pushrod engine, its SOHC. Why do people keep saying that when its been proven to be SOHC, there's even been photos of it.

I saw one running on the dyno last year and sitting around on stands and will back you up by stating that these engines I saw with a 6.2L sticker on the rocker cover were definately OHC, block resembled the 5.4.

Current Boss is Euro 4 compliant only. Any V8 released from now will require Euro 5 emission compiance.

I wonder of the Jag V8 will be used by Ford to fill the small capacity void while they sell us ecoboost engines.

A good move , I took a look yesterday at the new v8 jag , pretty and powerful with quality , and only 170k or so

You mean Euro 3 with a requirement of Euro 4 in 2010. Euro 5 will be later still.

Jag engine is too expensive for Ford.

That is correct. Euro 3 is what they are now. Euro 4 is 2010.

....never mind the fact that they would have to convice TATA to sell the engine back to them. Ford sold Jaguar and the chances of getting that 5.0L have subsequently gone from "incredibly slim" to "Mary-Kate Olsen"

So they canned it, brought it back from the dead and then canned it again for all but one model? Well that's going to turn out very economicaly viable isn't it...

things really dont look good for the falcon v8 boss, turbo 6 kicking *** and americans killing the boss's over there id say the next series of falcons will just be stuck with turbo's next series (shame 290kw is a lot of power to throw away)

Keep what we have... and give it some of the updates from the US... Nothing wrong with the Aussie Boss 5.4L and with Boost i can be even better..

Where does it say the Hurricane/Boss is getting canned? From what I understand the only news here is that it won't be destined to go into F-150 and Mustang. And I don't think Ford Au wanted it anyway, as Bill Osborne has already shown interest in using the 5.0L which, imo, is the wiser option.

Spot on, the decision to limit it to Super Duty F series means nothing to Ford Australia because they weren't going to use it anyway. The 5.0 is still going ahead so no big deal really, times change.

The stupid thing is that if they didn't stuff around by canning it in the first place they probably could have had it on the market long before the oil prices soared a month ago. You snooze, you lose.
