Default Driving Lights- How many watt's?

Hi all,

next few days i will be installing driving lights into my EL. i want to know how many watt globes i should get? i have seen 55 and 100 watt at supercheap.

The lights will be on at the same time as the low beams so i was thinking the 100 watt light would be to bright but i am not to sure.

those with driving lights what setup do you have?

Cheers

I would recommend to talk to one of the staff possible at supercheap or autobarn or repco they would able to help you. But in fitting its just matter of wiring with the headlights relay

i dont suggest talking to the staff at supercheap.
repco is better.
supercheap half the staff are to young to even have a license let alone know anything about cars.
repco actually has mechanics.

you know that running driving lights off low beams is illegal.......

dont run 100w globes in driving lights on low beam anyway, thats worse than having your high beams on at someone......

by that you mean having them on at the same time? if so BA/BF XR have both on, along with other cars, eg WRX and commodores

you'll find that they're fog lights, and if you have them on in conditions that dont warrant them, you'll cop a fine

Driving with fog lights on at any time of the day in any conditions is not illegal.

In NSW it is.

You can only use them if the conditions are poor.

I went to the RTA (NSW) website and discovered NSW Road Rules funnily enough are the same as the Victorian Road Rules, funnily enough because the Road Rules are Australia wide.

Road Rule 217 Using rear fog lights
(1) The driver of a vehicle fitted with a rear fog light must not
operate the fog light unless the driver is driving in fog or other
hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility.
Offence provision.
(2) In this rule:
rear fog light means a light fitted to a vehicle to make it more
easily visible from the rear in fog.

Road Rule 219 Lights not to be used to dazzle other road users
A driver must not use, or allow to be used, any light fitted to or
in the driver’s vehicle to dazzle, or in a way that is likely to
dazzle, another road user.

So I did a search on keyword "fog lights" and got this:

By simply using daytime running lights (DRL's), the visibility of your car is increased substantially to both pedestrians and other drivers.

It is necessary however that the correct lights be used. Fog lights and high beam are inappropriate and parking lights ineffective whilst driving. Until specially designed DRLs are installed, low beam headlights are the most effective way to make your vehicle more visible.

A recent NRMA report has found that DRLs could prevent a quarter of all fatal daylight collisions and more than a quarter of fatal daytime pedestrian accidents.

A combination of a light coloured vehicle and turning your low beam headlights on during the day will make it easier for other road users to not only see you but also to better judge the distance between themselves and your vehicle. This equates to less risky manoeuvres being undertaken.
Nowhere in this article does it tell me that it is illegal to use fog lights during the day, just inappropriate, and before you say but it also says that high beam lights are inappropriate, there is a specific offence in the Australian Road Rules governing the use of high beam lights.

But that is all the research I'm going to do in NSW. I'm a Victorian copper, I don't care what happens in other states.
