I've seen these advertised...

Plug it in once, then it's a magnetic connection for the charge cable.

this would work in charging but what about data changeover, esp to another brand.

If I can pull all the data he has off and store somewhere, is it true I wont be able to download to a different brand of tablet.

iCloud subscription, save it all on to there, $1.50/month for 50GB.

Tonz, how are the Samsung plugs better? Won't they get destroyed the same way, just with a USB connector?

Its super easy. Years ago you had to plug both cords into a computer, but these days samsungs come standad with an app and a usb adapter thing. Samsung to Samsung is wireless. But ive done the apple to samsung a few times and its easy. Open smart switch, select other device. Press go.

An iPad has to be pretty ancient and quite damaged before it’s beyond fixing. The ifixit guides are a good indicator of common service procedures - so you can ask for a particular repair with confidence.
