New Li-Ion Batteries Charge 70 Percent in 2 Minutes, Last for 20 Years

Normally, it's safe to be skeptical about new battery technology, but there's something rather hopeful about this breakthrough. The new battery isn't altogether new. It's actually just an improvement upon existing lithium-ion technology.

The key comes in the form of nanostructures. Instead of the traditional graphite used to create the lithium-ion battery's anode, this new technology uses a cheap titanium dioxide gel, the same kind of material used in sunscreen to absorb UV rays. The scientists found away to turn the compound into nanostructures that speed up the charging process. And speed it up they do. This simple innovation makes lithium-ion batteries charge 20-times faster and last 20-times longer.

"With our nanotechnology, electric cars would be able to increase their range dramatically with just five minutes of charging, which is on par with the time needed to pump petrol for current cars," Associate Professor Chen Xiaodong of Nanyang Technological University said in a release. This is very interesting and is a breakthrough that we have been waiting for in battery technology.
With this, it will make electric cars more viable to more of the population.

This was eventually gonna happen. With electric cars and renewable energy becoming more prevalent the smart investment would be in batt tech.

It's funny how they have found using 'Titanium dioxide' which is apparently VERY available in normal soil samples.

Very cheap and available product apparently.

Yes I would'nt mind investing in battery technology either!

You make a valid point but disposal hasn't killed nuclear or coal or oil.
As with submarines if you invest in somethings research and development the answer will come, this may not be the panacea but proves progress is being made. bring it on!
I like science and hope those scientists aren't forced to get real jobs in the real world.

Fact is its a 'breakthrough' in technology.....It was only a matter of 'time'.

Too bad LPG technology is taking so long to breakthrough as a 'clean' fuel.

After driving a Tesla Model S in Melbourne a little while ago everything else just seems......dirty.

It easily beats the pants off any turbo falcon....period.

Supercar performance...and imagine what it would be like with a flash/tune...

O.k thanks for the heads up....Never new these new batteries were capable of overheating like this.

Am hoping the newer tech does'nt have the same probs.

Someone in the USA remapped a Chevy Volt and hot it to do a 6.5 second 0-100 with just the remap, big improvement.

Geesus that IS Impressive.

I do know that electric motors can produce alot of torque especially when A/C type motor.

The torque curve make internal combustion engines very old. Problem is powering these buggers.
