Shows a stark contrast into what product the buyer is after compared to 10 years ago.
Car markers have introduced a range of vehicles that pretty much fit exactly what families, singles and niche markets want. Even luxury and hyper cars have had to adjust their range to suit the new ultra rich buyer.
Times have moved quickly in 10 years of the motoring industry.

How much was fuel back then? 90c? $1.10?

It's fuel prices that are killing the Falcon nothing else.

But she never let me down. She was comfortable to ride and shook her **** when I gave her the boot a bit.

I don't think that is the main reason. If that is the case why are SUV sales on the increase? I feel people are after more practical vehicles these days as can be seen by the increase in sales of SUV's and dual cab utes.

hatches/SUV's better utilise the space available to a car.
familys *need* to take all their gadgets everywhere in the car now, won't fit in a sedan.

everyone buys dual cab utes instead of normal utes.

I cant think of ANYONE with a family that would buy a normal ute(if they needed a ute)!
I have a dual cab, if I didnt have a family I would have an xr6t ute. But i do like the clearance on my Triton too. Kinda fun climbing things, going up gutters without even thinking etc.

If your talking about the bigger more expensive SUV's I doubt the "wealthy" owners would be concerned with fuel prices on the rise.

My auntie lives in a country where fuel prices are $3.00 a litre, her husband is quite wealthy guess what she drives?? Let's just say it's not a 3.0litre SUV.

But I do agree it is a mix of things. People I have asked say Fuel prices are too high and It's a taxi.

Exactly! I just cant get over how the Hilux can sell so many units. I dont believe that many people actually need what the Hilux offers (ruggedness, ground clearance etc) enough to make the compromise of driving a hideous tractor on the road instead of a car. I think the popularity of these trucks is just a symptom of a herd mentality - they're in fashion.

It quite clear that fuel prices have nothing to do with the large car sales levels - SUV sales is irrefutable proof of this. You'll get further proof when Falcon sales barely budge despite the release of ecoboost and ecoLPi. Its the 3 box body shape - no one wants a sedan.

No I was talking about SUV's in general considering some small ones use the same amount of fuel as a Falcon. Or more.

hasnt anyone here noticed the amazing stat????

In 2002 the top 2 sellers combined for 10,600 sales.

In 2012 the top 2 sellers combined - only 6,500 sales!
Even tho the car market would have grown a lot in 10 yrs!

It just shows the massive fragmentation of the market with so many sizes of vehicle and so many manufacturers. Basically car manufacturers are trying to cater for so many different segments

Considering there was no Territory, Ford Australia is actually doing better relative to GMH than it was back in April 2002. Surprisingly though, April 2002 was during the period where Ford Australia had its strongest product ever.

Spot on mate, I said essentially the same on another forum. The proliferation of manufacturers/model choice is the reason and combined with the growth of the SUV segment, our poor ole Falc is rapidly going out of the picture.

A more telling stat would be to look at yearly Falcon sales from BA onwards given the AU was largely unloved. If memory serves, BA sales in the hey day was 6K and sometime 7K.

Interested to know where you found the sales figures. I remember mid '05 when Falcon was strong and Territory was through the roof, would be interesting to see the sales numbers. Good times back then.........
