Default Tint rip off?

So this morning I wander into my local Tint-A-Car outlet to get a quote on tinting the new canopy on my Navara. I'm expecting around $150-$200. The guy comes back with a quote of $275. Are my expectations unreasonable or has this guy tried to rip me off? I had an entire panel van tinted for $275 a couple of years ago. That was 10 windows of various shapes and sizes for $275 and they even picked up and delivered my car. My canopy has three flat windows and relative to my panel van would be a quick and easy job.

Not sure about his prices but prices can vary quite a bit depending on the quality of the tint being used

What % of tint was being quoted??? The darker is usally more expensive

I paid $280 for 5% for my sedan a few months back including removal of the previous tint on there

No removal of tint on my canopy. It was 5% tint which was the darkest they had.

I think based on your comment there I'll look elsewhere. Definitely looks like he was out to rip me off. Anyone know a good tinter in the south east suburbs of Melbourne or Mornington Peninsula? I had Tint Professor do my last car but had issues so don't really want to use them again.

Sorted. Spoke to a neighbor and I've booked in with Dr Tint for limo tint at $150. Nearly half the price.

Good to hear. Yeah, I was going to say.... got the Focus done with 20% tint for $190 last year.

Always pays to shop around. But if they quote that price it means more than not say yes to that price straight away.

I wouldn't call it a rip off unless he actually charged you that price.

Its a quote, not an account!!

I know some businesses will quote high if they don't want the job.

My sister got her Golf tinted today at Tint a Car for $295! Probably about half the amount of windows as your Navara. Girls really get ripped in the auto world.

Sorry bud, but to clarify I was only getting three perspex windows on my canopy tinted. Not the whole car. $275 was an obscene quote IMO. Tint-A-Car won't be seeing my business any time soon.

Yes. Most tint places offer a warranty depending on the quality of the tint. I remember I was offered 2, perhaps 3 products when I was getting the Festiva done. Only difference was the brand / quality of the tint and about $50 in price:

ie, brand A was $180, you got 12 months warranty and was good to darken the windows on the cheap when selling a car.

Brand B was $240 and had a 2-5yr warranty.

Brand C was a well known brand, like 3M and had a lifetime warranty. That would be around $290.

Note the warranty was generally for discolouration (going purple over time mostly), bubbling, or the physical integrity of the tinting material being used.

A recent quote process for the wifes Focus showed me that what I described above is still what happens.

I was quoted 330 last week for a full strip and re-tint. The guy said they would need the car for half a day, so I guess based on time and material that's not too bad.

its not just about how long it sticks to the windows. Like yellowfestiva mentioned cheap tints make the windows dark, thats all they do. The pricey ones actually keep the car cooler like metallic/ceramic

$150 would be a fair price for both sides for a good quality tint film on a canopy. you will generally pay a bit of a premium price at a "t-a-t" franchise.

you mentioned perspex windows ??... i would expect that they should be glass . if they are perspex then dont expect to get any warrenty, as perspex will often cause the tint film to bubble over time.

Should be right. Heaps of dual cab utes getting around with limo tint on the back to keep the tools safe. They all have plastic windows like my flexiglass canopy.

I'll post pics Wednesday arvo. I also found out this guy has done my sisters car a couple of years back and her inlaws car too. All are very happy with his work and the price.
