Default Article on the AU in the Age Today

A write up on the used car review section on the AU. The car they always show is the S1 Forte in stock condition then critises the front of the car. But otherwise it came out well against the VT.

Mmmm they forgot the last two years when sales really plummeted!

Not sure if the AU was released in 1988, might be a typo there...
Great car! I'm hopeing my transmission lasts more than 150,000kms tho.
You can get them cheaper than what "The Age" reckons too, not a good selling car.
I better hang onto it then! Good read tho, thanx buickman.

Yeah, very interesting...

A quiet update in mid 1999 resulted in a bigger brake booster, 24mm lowered suspension (because the car looked too high) and a few other tweaks.
Does anyone know anything bout that? When it happened, etc? Cheers.

They are bargains, Last day of last financial year, Picked up an 2001 AU11 wagon, Futura 103k with alloys, cruise, elec windows , tinted cargo barrier new tyres and those fancy rola racks for 14k. Made them put it on the hoidt and service it. One owner and car looks and drives like brand new. Its hard to believe the redbook price for a new one was 37k. Im never buying new while cars this new are this cheap. :1syellow1

yep good car in S2 and S3 mode.....
I still can't help myself looking at a bargain T3 instead of a BA when the time comes.

Hi Mate,

I really look forward to your comments on the AU compared to your VX. What AU Falcon are you getting?

My AU XR6 has done 156,000k on the same box. It's well worn, but no signs of death for it so far.

It's a pity most reviews talk about the AU and a bit about the AUII. I have an AUIII and i'm sick of reading how apparently crap an AU is :P

Even this article, made during this very month, doesn't talk about the AUIII :(

I do notice though that the article gives it a 5 star safety rating from www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au, I went there to try and see what gives it a 5 star rating, but can't find any info on it...

What's so great about it that gives 5 out of 5 for safety?

One consistent theme in reviews over the years is the better quality of th AU compared to the equivalent Commodores. I have an AU XR8 and an AUIII SE ute (4 sale BTW) and although not perfect, I am happy with them both. But then again I actually like the shape of the AU, especially from side on. It is a pity the average aussie consumer didn't appreciate it as well.

Their not a crap car for the money.
The AU1 Forte/Futura can look neat with wheels, spoiler kit & lowered.

Its just every pic I see of commenting & bagging on the appearance of the AU,s is a stock white AU1 forte.
I don't think in the premium & lower spec AU2/3 there was any great changes maybe a small cosmetic appearance only the S3 XR's & Tseries had better performance & cosmetics.

Excellent independent rear suspension available only on Fairmont Ghia.
Someone didnt do his research... was an option on all models. Theres a few Fairmonts about that have it.... not to mention my VCT (standard) and the Fairlaines.

Still, I'd take the live axle over the VT IRS "tyre muncher" any day.

ALL AU XR's SI II III all had same power outputs
ie HP 164
VCT 172
while the VCT in ghias had 168
but as AU went on the did get more astheticly pleasing and not so harsh on the eye the really only ugly AU was the AUI forte but even they can be made to look good all XR's and premium models looked great not to mention T Series

Id say fortes and futura's with IRS are as rare as rocking horse poo... but the fact still remains that it was an option.
Some of these journalists (very loose use of that term) really dont know or even care what they type. The fact that nothing was mentioned about how overwhelmingly successful the AU XR's were proves this.
