Recommendations for Hobart for one Day in June 20th

Just booked a cheap flight in the middle of winter for Tassie... (if it was summer I would have stayed longer, but I'm only going to see what it looks like and for bragging rights, that I've been there done that)

Anyway, what should I do as a pedestrian?

Places to visit, people to see?

I'm assuming it'll be freezing there on June 20th

Mt Wellington, is a must, I loved it, your right it will be cold and a lot of snow, you might not be able to get all the way to the summit, if the weather is bad but still well worth it, if you happen to strike a lovely sunny day , the view from the top will be amazing.

Well, it's a Saturday, so Salamanca markets will be on. That's if your into markets. But there is some grat stuff there if you can put up with the rubbish.

Cadburys isn't really within pedestrian distance, and you will probably need to book for it. The Cascade brewery (highly recommended) is a long walk or around $15-20 in a taxi from the water front, but it's also a place you should probably book into. Although I had a frien down from Sydney and we 'lucked' a apot as soon as we walked in the door.

There are a couple of ferry cruises that go in different areas. From an hour or two cruise to a very full day cruise which goes a long way south but take in some great scenery.

If you were to hire a car you could head inland a little and go to Richmond which is a great historic town and a lot of people could fill in a day or two there. Especially if you get lost in the maze!

Or others have said you could head up the mountain, which is a great view, but there isn't a whiole lot to do. Mind you I have been up there quite a few times.

Personally, I'd hire a car, book a tour for Cadburys in the morning, then also book a tour for cascade brewery around lunchtime and head back there for the tour and a great feed. They have a cafe/eatery at the brewery which has some great food and view to the gardens. From there I'd head back to the waterfront area (after the markets have packed up and gone) and have a good look around the waterfront.

But in all honesty there is plenty to do and see. What are you interested in?

There is also a maritime museum on the warves somehwere.

I wouldnt bother with Cadburys anymore. they don't do the tours anymore. Go on the peppermint bay cruise instead.

Where do people go in Hobart on a week night? Are they all at home busy watching reality tv?

I was over there Thursday and Friday for work. The CBD looks like a big country town. It's a very pretty setting but I don't think that there is too much to see in the CBD. I could be wrong of course. We didn't have the opportunity to head out and look at other things, so can't comment on much else.

Like above, it will be damn cold so bring a jacket.

Mt Wellington if you can gives you one of the best views of a city anywhere in Aus in my opinion; its not a huge city but nice.

Id also be having lunch somewhere in Salamanca, maybe ball and chain if your into your really nice steaks.

If your keen on beer the the Cascade Brewery tour would be good (im still yet to do it), but book early.

Hobart in less than a day is almost impossible, Tassie's just not that type of place.

If you wanted a different experience then I would say do the mountain, then head off to port Arthur. Pt A is about 1.5 hours drive east of hobart so travel time might kill that idea.

Oh yeah and the market is good for some random food, some stalls are ok if you are in need of gifts.

Yeah that's a real shame about the Cadbury Factory, we went there still though, just for the goddies at the end, lol.

I normally stay out of the candy eisle, but Cadbury being Australian and all do they make some nice "birthday" chocolates I can send someone overseas? It doesn't have to be fancy, just authentically Australian will do the trick.

Really you need to give yourself 3 day min, probably 10 to have a good look at Ta. It's a beautiful place.
