sorry guys but I have never understood drifting. I have seen it many times and from a spectator standpoint its just well <yawn> until someone smashes something.

I love watching drift shows, you guys gotta watch Formula D its mostly about the competitions, after a few episodes you'll find yourself really getting into how competitive it is once you start learning about the drivers, teams and there cars. I highly recommend getting yours hands on a few episodes!

If you have a bit of money perhaps look at setting up a RWD Focus? There are turnkey V8 RWD kits for the LR model. And there was a XR6T powered LS Focus in
NZ a year or 2 back as well.

Realistically, if you want to spend as little money for the most result, get a non-registerable imported Jap car.

my mates 180sx is completely stock (other than exhaust) and its a decent drifter... someone else we know has an r33, rebuilt, bigger turbo, done a lot of mods and ive seen him skate on a straight road about 200 metres before

Basically run anything as long as it has a live axle and good torque. The TF cortina would be the latest smaller car that fits the bill.

There should be more that can be done to make a drift cars suspension; such as a transverse a-arm. This links the bottom of the diff via an a-frame to the front on the trailing arms, drops the roll centre to the pivot under the diff and eliminates tramp, would have to be good for a drift car.

i thought its better to have a car with irs to drift, gotta have the tight/strong lsd or lokka though.

Half right..IRS = good. Means rear adjustable grip.

LSD...unless its a mechanical, you will face trouble.

lol!!! we tried drifting our mustang on a closed track day at winton. I highly recommend against it.

But truthfully you need plenty of power for drifting.

Are you going to strip the car completly (drift only car)? or have a weekend warrior?

My brother is into drifting a bit. He has a r32 gtst skyline that is off the road at the moment getting a rb26 conversion done (far better base than the rb20 in terms of power). From my understanding, (and ironically the reason why the sport started in Japan) the reason you see a lot of jap cars in drifting is that the jap cars such as skylines, slivias, 180s etc is because of the exceptionally low centre of gravity and ability to handle. That coupled with the fact that where each car lacks, it is relatively easier to get your hands on parts more ready suited to driftin at a cheaper price than what it would be for an aussie car. Thats not to say it cann't be done. Just not as easily as a jap car.

I suggest you take a look at secretdrift.com.au. my brother is a part of that forum as well as some of his mates who also drift. There you will find a vast supply of drift knowledge and expertise at your fingertips. And please dont take this post as completely true. This is just my understand that I have picked up from being in the odd conversation with my brother about drifting. Sorry for the long post.

A Escort with a 2 litre Pinto with a turbo and EFI on the side would be a great little car, though the short wheelbase may provide some twitch in it. Or if the budget grows a Cosworth would be insanse.

On the other hand like a lot of people have suggested, a Turbo E Series, lots of cheap parts, lots of torque, lots of fun and different to most of the drift crowd.
