how good do tyre plugs work.

G,day.
Found not 1 but 2 screws in my tyres last night, so i plugged them with those strips. How good do they work? has anyone had any
bad experiences with them?

I haven't any problems with them yet, and I've used at least 15 over the last 10 years, once even on the rear of a motorbike.

The only one I had to refit about 3 times was very close to the sidewall and kept leaking. It still lasted the life of the tyre once it was inserted succesfully though.

we used to do em all the time on the cabs, never an issue really.

if they really were that dangerous.. they wouldnt sell them .. or would say.."not reccomended for street use" etc

otherwise they are open to a big fat law suit

ive used them before a few times and never had any issues (even on 18" rims and low profile tyres)

I have used many without issues .... front and rear. No adverse affects in tyre performance.

I had one in one of my rear Maxxis tyres and it stayed in there for 30,000km before I had to replace the tyre (end of life wear on it anyway).

Just copped a screw in the tyre, and seeing as there is 1 odd wheel nut, that my wheel brace won't fit, thought I'd give this a try to get moving.

Anyone know where you can buy these from?

any auto parts shop should stock some(supercheap..repco..autobarn..bursons)
who knows what section they would be in tho. best off asking at the counter

The screw is in the tread?- if its in the sidewall or close to the edge, no good!

Hmmm,
Are we talking about plugs that you put in from the outside? ie Not pulling the tyre off the rim?

I thought that these were not allowed (illegal?) as you were not able to see what damage had been caused to the belting. Got a tyre fixed at Bob Jane and pretty sure thats where I heard it.

I thought the proper way to do it was to pull the tyre and check for damage, especially when a screw has gone in. Then to fit and glue the plug from the inside, due to having a mushroom head on it it seals correctly and safely.

yer i agree with mr hardware,
in my old 1's i got a nail, i took it to bob jane and they pluged,
they took the screw out bang the plug in done, pay and thats it.
they work great you should never have a problem.
just dont buy a cheap brand the handles tend to snap.

Yep, in the tread.

Supercheap didn't sell the damn things, so ended up buying a can of emergency sealant crap - that didn't work!

Whacked a wood screw back in the hole, pumped it up, and it lasted me to the tyre shop. They reckon it couldn't be repaired, but I reckon I'll hunt around for the plug things and give it a shot.

My dad has been using these plugs for ages and never had a problem.

I thinks its such a cheap and effective way of repairing tyres.

When i was in the tyre game the only time we used those plugs where on ride on lawn mowers and wheel barrows.
Maybe the odd trailer, But when i comes to cars you'd always do a mushroom plug.

As for Bob Jane i think that's just unprofessional, Or just a busy/bad tyre fitter on the day.

It's not a legal way to repair a tyre on a vehicle in (S.A)

Found some today! The repair kit was $12 or so from supercheap and it worked a treat.

Dunno how confident I am though on putting the wheel back on the front, but I suppose the worse that can happen is it goes flat, and I'll notice it happen.

they used to be illegal in vic, the old ones you put in with the air gun not sure about modern ones, i believe the reasoning was that under braking the plugs could pop out, i had one done recently it still goin no problems....... even though i asked to have the tyre removed and a chemical vulcanising patch on the inside of the tyre with a balance thank you, alass service seems to be a thing of the past :(, i wont be going back to that dikwad.

Hi all,
Happened to be looking at the QLD transport department rules on modifying cars and came across this. Clearly says that the tyre must come off to be checked.

Food for thought, shove that part of the regs in the tyre repair guys face when he won't do it the right way cause it's too hard or will cost extra.

Repairs to tubeless tyres
Permanent repairs can only be made when the tyre is
removed from the rim. The tyre must be examined to
ensure it is structurally sound. The damaged area must
be prepared on the inside for a patch or mushroom
headed plug to be fitted and vulcanised into position.
Any repairs to a tyre must be sealed to prevent moisture
or contaminants from entering the tyre casing or
structure.
Caution: Plug repairs can only be made in the tread area
of the tyre and not in sidewalls or where the tread and
sidewall meet.
Punctures in tubeless tyres must not be repaired from the
outside or without removing the tyre from the rim as
this method is prone to failure.
Vehicle owners with doubts on tyre repairs should
contact a reputable tyre dealer for proper repairs.
