Hi all
I got my XR lowered when i got my rims, and now there is a slight speak noise coming from the drivers side rear spring/shock. I took it back and asked the tyre mob i bought it off and they told me it was some kind of plate?? or something like that moving around at the top of the shock/spring and as it gets worse it will start to knock? Apparantly its only a genuine part bout $105. Does anyone have any idea wat this could be and if its a DIY job? Cheers Frank

Frank,
I personally wouldnt buy yet. I reckon it may be the rubber cap that may sit on or under the spring that needs a bit of grease chucked in between. Try that before you spend more dough first. Get them to do the grease option to start with, if that fails then try the plate as suggested.

Top IRS shock mount is what he is on about. A known problem and they fail at about the 50k mark. They are only a genuine part but $105 is a bit rich, I got my last pair for $77 each and that was only a couple of months ago. It is a fairly involved job that requires two people to do it, if you paid for springs to be fitted I think you'd be best off getting these fitted too.
Word of advice too, Ford changed the design slightly from the original units so now the shock shaft comes through a bit further. To rectify this (it causes knocking) all you need to do is fit two standard thickness washers underneath the rubber cup at the top of the mount. Makes the rear end feel a hell of a lot tighter too.
