Well, I live up in Holloway's Bch, Cairns, Qld
Woke up at 6ish this morning, the old boy tells me that we are flooded in. I thought ah yeah, can't be too bad...don't think we had much rain...Took the 4WD out and this is what I found...  Now, I know the area pretty well and judging by flood maps and contour maps I've seen at work, it's probably a good 1m+ over the road...Note the water on the signs? It dips down about another 500mm after that...It's still thundering down at the moment so it'll only get worse! Keep watching for updates, gonna head out at 9 and see how the flood levels going.

Nothing new in Cairns mate....It's built on a swamp and the majority is under Q100. It's pitiful...
Apprently the Barron River is going to burst it's banks soon, then it'll get gnarly!

  Water has come up a fair bit. Took the XR out and nearly didn't get back due to a dip flooding. Rain hasn't eased. The whole of Cairns is shut off!

That is intense, I was up that way a few years back when Cyclone Larry hit. My mates parents live in Mission Beach.
The water was every were, not quite as bad as that though.

Geez. I have a fair bit of family up in Ingham. And recall back in 1998, with Cyclone Joy I think it was. We got stuck in Toobana for 3 days at a cousins place, who lived on the highway. We were blocked on both sides of the highway, couldn't get in town and cou;dn't get to Twonsville to fly home.

What's the opinions of getting all that rain which falls in the Wet Tropics and somehow diverting the runoff south using dams, pipes, and existing rivers? Not just in the eastern states, through WA as well.
I know it'd cost a LOT of Government money (which the Government likely won't be willing to spend on other than themselves), but I believe that it's a decent answer to the current drought AND "an" answer to future water shortages.

they did talk of putting a pipeline from the burdekin dam but that is definitely not wanted up this way and would meet huge opposition.mainly becuse they would end up draining it.queensland premiers seem to forget people live up this way.
as far as pumping from the burdekin river while its in flood, go for it

Traffic was shocking yesterday morning. The Captain Cook Hwy into town was blocked and they were sending everyone through the western bypass which is the road I take to get home. Took me 1.5 hrs to get from smithfield to redlynch.

Great Pics there. We had a lot of staff not able to make it to work yesterday, and those that did make it from the North, had a hell of a run in. It took one of our managers nearly an hour to get from Smithfield Woolworths to the roundabout at Skyrail (about 1km). At least it has eased up today. Ive got water lying everywhere around and under the house. But, it is wet season.....
