Default Duck protester shot

A PROTESTER has been shot in the face just hours after the opening of the controversial duck hunting season this morning.

Protester Julia Symons of Melburne suffered pellet injuries to her face, teeth and hand in a accidental shooting at Lake Buloke, 12km east of Donald in Victoria's west.

Witnesses say Ms Symons, 43, was waist-deep in water when she was shot by the hunter, believed to be aiming at a low-flying bird.

Have your say now. Should duck hunting be banned?

Why would you put yourself into the potential line of fire?

Are people really that stupid as to put themselves into such danger?

Someone was bound to get shot eventually and frankly she's a very lucky women that it wasn't much worse. How would the unlucky 14y.o. feel about shooting someone because they were in a position that anyone with half a brain wouldn't be in.

For the record i have no opinion on duck hunting.

There will be a beat up about this, but seriously, why go into the line of fire? They are ducks, not your kids. They dont get shot at for a portion of the year, so when they can be shot at Stay out of the way!!!

The Police even told them not to go out in the water, yet they still did.
She should be arrested and charged with failing to obey a Police order.

If it looks like a protester, wades out into the lake like a protester and carries on like a protester, then it's probably a duck, boom boom.

Yes I hope the Police fine her and really let her have both barrels.

I wonder who foots the hospital bill.

Was the "chick chick boom" chick a witness?

Ahh, I could go on for ages, but I wont, I gotta duck off down to the shops.

Why shouldn't a 14 year old be able to hunt ducks?

I know I had shot plenty of weapons and driven many cars by that age.

As long as you've passes your duck identification test, no dramas. My dad used to go duck hunting, slow roasted duck is fantastic. These people have been around for ages, sticking their noses into things that don't concern them. When there was drought, duck season didn't exist, why someone would intentionally put themselves into a situation like this beats the hell outta me.

Protesters are not allowed by law to go into the water at designated hunting places during specific times in order to avoid this very incident. However, for those on a moral crusade who are above the law (it would seem), a face full of shot pellets is a real risk. Lucky it wasn't at close range otherwise we'd have a fatality on our hands.

Personally, I haven't hunted ducks for over 15 years, but there's a certain allure to going out on a cold morning and bagging your own game, to be cooked on the Weber BBQ the next night etc. In a society of junk food, drive thru's, child obesity, plastic-wrapped everything, and mass produced tasteless gruel for the masses, I quite like the idea of going out and getting your own....be it a fresh whiting from the bay or a quail or duck etc from the field.

Hunting used to be a noble pursuit, but alas, all but gone to the pressure of a sterile, politically correct world.

Serves the bloody hippie right. Personally, I think natural selection shouldve been a little more assertive.....

EDIT: Id also like to add that this poor 14 year old now has to live with the fact theyve shot someone, courtesy of a oxygen theif who probably hasnt learnt anything from the experience & will only resolve to press on harder with their "moral" crusade.

I thought Duck hunting was banned. Shooting an animal with a gun, where it has no chance of survival unless the hunter misses. It's all a bit primative.

Im not a hunter, never have and never will as i love animals but i support it aslong as the ducks are not made to suffer, same goes for Rabbit, Foxes, Roo, Wild pigs, feral cats, Ect.

Stupid do gooder should be in alot of trouble, imagine how much it will have affected this kid.

The injuries she’s suffered look more like she was punched in the face, not shot but at least she got her picture in the paper.

If I remember correctly you have a history on here as an anti-gunner.

So at what age should a person be able to hunt ducks?

Or fish?

Or harvest carrots? (murdering plants is such a crime, ask any tree hugger)

My family must be stupid then

I shot a gun (.22 cal semi automatic ) when i was 3 yrs old and yes it was prob the best thing that ever happened.

I have a great respect for what a gun can do to both animal and physical thing (ie cans etc ) and i don't have a gun in my home here in geelong but i do have 4 at the farm in both shot gun and .22 cal

when i get my oldest boys hearing fixed all of my children will be shown the right way to use a gun

as for the person that got shot were they doing there in the first place how dumb can one person be

not the smartest person in the world in my books

Jason

And I'll tell you from personal experience that the chance of missing is very high indeed. If you're a crack shot you still have a legal bag limit to contend with. The odds are heavily stacked in the favour of the ducks. Mind you, its a very different scenario for millions of chickens, cattle and pigs which are bred in farms and taken to slaughter houses where the chance of survival is absolutely zero. Similarly, the millions of tonnes of prawns and fish which are netted via massive drift nets each year.

I'd question which is the more primitive..........

I have nothing against someone prostesting in support of their views in a peaceful safe legal manner after all thats what the diggers fought for, but this was not safe or legal.
If she chose to make herself a target she deserves the consequences. I'm just glad for the sake of the 14 Yo hunter that she wasn't killed, that would have haunted him for life

People have a legal right to hunt duck, in season. I understand some people dont like that, fair enough, dont hunt ducks then. But to demand that no-one has the right to hunt ducks is wrong. Its a pursuit like any other, that a person who chooses to engage in, should have the right to engage in. I understand opposition, and respect the right of people to oppose hunting, but to go to the extent some of these people go to is asking for trouble and crosses a line from protest to interfering with the legal pursuits of law abiding citizens. Stick to protests outside parliament.

duck, cow, its all meat, and most eat at least some forms of meat.

One thing though, while the lady placed herself in that danger, the 14 yr old should never have pulled the trigger. He certainly is not gun smart.
