Gotta agree with you there Mr S! The 4.2 sounds very sweet, best engineered V-8 in a road car IMO.

The Merc 5.5 s/c is awesome as well though!

One of my mates had a 4.2 sounded quiet good, have to admit the holden 5.0 did sound good with a decent exaust as well the winsor 5.0 was good to but man the boss in full flight, had and heared them all but the boss is just heaven.
Boss after 3500rpm... OH!

my 4.0 LEXUS quadcam V8 sounds great up until about 4 grand with a 2.5" 5L commodore muffler and cat but at 6 grand it sounds like a quiet V8 supercar.
personally i like a 5Lcommode note the best

The HSV 5.7L strokers sound absolutey awesome with a good 3 inch exhaust especially at idle. Nothing in the factory Ford line up comes even close for sound.

You start adding bigger cams etc and the fords sound much better but the Holden 5.0/5.7 stroker with a bit of work still sounds better.

That being said my ute has an awesome note but the idle note doesnt cut it, a lumpier cam will sort that out though

The Holden 5ltr Efi for me followed by the 5ltr Efi Windsor, the Boss and LS1 are loud and sound ok but they both lack the pure rumble that you feel as well as hear in the 5ltr Holden/Ford.

My #1 vote: Holden 5.0. This girl at work has a VT Berlina 5.0 with extractors but std exhaust, and I reckon it sounds nastier (albeit quieter) than my EB (see sig).

If voting could be staggered, I'd go:

#2: Boss
#3: Windsor
#4: LS2 (only because I haven't heard one at full noise yet)
#5: LS1 (behind the LS2 because almost all that I have heard are shithouse)

#1, 2 and 3 are pretty close for me, with 4 & 5 trailing waaay off...

I like the Ford 5l than Holden 5l as both sound old school when done right. The newer Boss & LS motors do sound sweet but not as good.

He used the 4wd gt4, so the rear wheel drive part wasn't the hardest part of the conversion. I've seen video of this thing doing a burnout and it certainly sounds very tough.

Just had a look at the voting. It appears that the majority of people who voted windsor are AU owners and the majority of people who voted boss are BA owners....

Funny that.

AMG E55 or SL55.

Of the engines in the poll the windsor got my vote although the old Holden was very good

Boss 290 with straightout Herrod extractors sounds pretty awesome! (even though, less power) I dropped my exhaust numerous times at Calder & Heathcote.. And the sound is magic!

A slightly modified LS1 sounds tops

http://fastls1.homeftp.net/FST57L_Flatout.mpg

(The server is a crappy PC so you might have to wait a couple of minutes if it says 'to busy')

Not that im biased ;)

Hope you have good speakers, you know what its like when you see a V8 supercar on TV then you hear them in real life

Got to agree with you Charlie the Boss with the Herrods exhaust especially the quad system.

The LS1 would come a distant last, nearly all of them sound like vacuum cleaners. The Boss sounds awesome up in the revs, and the old school 5 litres sound tough too with a decent exhaust but the best sounding modern EFI V8 would be either the latest Mustang Cobra, for its awesome deep rumble with a decent exhaust and the Merc/McLaren SLR, cause at full noise it sounds like a WW2 Spitfire on a straffing run. Absolutely amazing sound that I have never heard another car sound like, except the SL55 with the same engine but slightly different sound.

1st : Boss 5.4 (after hearing a manual take off i fell in love)
very mean throaty note..

2nd: holden 5ltr carb/injected
the classic aussie v8 note.. very mean very throaty.. even when stock!

3rd: ford clevo carb
cant beat the twin exhaust clap of a 351.

4th: ford windsor injected
but only with a good exhaust setup.. and pref manual. my eb manual had the best "tear" sound goin past 3500...

5th: ls2
better than ls1.

6th: ls1
crap unless got a good exahust.. even then its just like two jap cars.

old 350 chev is in there somewhere but i aint herd one lately so i couldnt place it.. somewhere just below ford cleve' maybe..

some of those german v8's sound sweet, I drove a 4.0l 7 series, sound nicer than the motors listed here in my opinion.

but yeah my vote goes to the boss

It sounds heaps better now. Still has the grunty sound without the cowboy ute bark.

Hoops au sedan also has an awesome note.
