Default STD AU Dash Cluster

Does the standard fit AU dash cluster have the lights in it telling you what gear you are in? or is it only in the higher end clusters?

What do you want it for? easiest option in a series 1 is a fair**** cluster, but then you loose your DTE

i've swapped a tickford cluster into my auIII wagon and it has the gear display between the DTE and the odometer. makes a difference as i had the same problem as you with the lights around the gear shift being really dim

I wouldnt call mine dim... well actually i would.. but not in the sence of being a lack of light... more dim-witted...

The light turns on from time to time when i switch on the headlights... but not all the time... yet i cant figure out why...

Also ... there are a few mods needed to get the Series 2/3 clusters working properly in the Series 1's (which i think you have ... i can't remember now).

It can be done ... just some re-wiring of pin-outs on the cluster need to be done (just for some of the dash lights to work properly ... and the oil-pressure gauge to work as well from memory).

Will only be worth looking into if the price on the cluster is right... :P

An XR2 cluster is a straight swap for a standard series 2 one?

Well yes and no
it tells you where your gear selector is in numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7, 7 being park, 6 rev 5 neutral 4 3 2 1 the gear you have selected on the shifter etc
