Tailem bend preferred choice for new motorsport complex
FIRST ON 7: Tailem Bend has been selected as the South Australian Government’s preferred choice for a new motorsport complex.

Mitsubishi’s old test track has been bought by the Peregrine Corporation, which owns and operates ‘On The Run’ service stations.

A handful of potential sites were identified including Gillman, the Adelaide International Raceway Monarto and Tailem Bend.

Recreation and Sport Minister Leon Bignell asked the Confederation of Australian Motorsport to find the best venue.

“They came back to us recommending that Tailem Bend is the most suited site for a motorsport complex,” Mr Bignell said.

The track was being used by a not-for-profit group whose lease runs out at the end of the year.

The Coorong Council recently put the property up for sale and it was bought by the Peregrine Corporation.

The Shahin family aims to transform the old venue into a world class track, but critics say it is too far away from Adelaide.

“Commercially, I don’t think it’s viable, it’s only going to be good in my opinion as a club level track, not as a motorsport facility for the general public,” Port Adelaide-Enfield mayor Gary Johanson said.

Other agree it won’t suit grassroots racing.

“The inability for the local community participants able to gain access on a Wednesday night or a Friday night is certainly a big hole for us, it’s a major concern,” Malcolm Bulley from the National Drag Racing Association said.

The SA Government has not committed any funds to upgrade the Tailem Bend track.
