Default Ford and Holden work together on making a V8 RWD Coupe (POLL)

I'm putting this thread out there to make a suggestion that i'm sure will polarize forum members out there.

But first, take a look at the Toyota 86 & Subaru BRZ. Keep that image in mind.

Would it ever be possible for Holden and Ford to work together on a V8 RWD Coupe? Now that you've spilled your coffee all over the keyboard, let me explain the idea.

Toyota & Subaru are fierce rivals in several segments of the new car market. They compete against each other in various motor racing categories. They are essentially a red (Toyota) vs blue (Subaru) rivalry, similar to that of Holden & Ford. But in putting those competitive differences asside, and combining their engineering, technology, and design ideas, they've come up with a shared vehicle that is both brilliant in design, looks, and performance, and all for a very affordable price to the consumer.

Holden's reborn V8 Monaro sold very well for a number of years, and with a better executed export plan could have sold much more. Ford fans have been crying out for a 2-door V8 Falcon since the last XC Cobra was sold. What if the two biggest names in Australian Car manufacturing could put their differences aside and work on what could be the most amazing car ever conceived in Australia? They could share ideas, designs, and concepts. They could each end up with their own 'style' of car despite sharing the same underpinnings. They could share the costs - making it more financially viable as a venture, and eventually cheaper to the consumer in the showroom. And with views to overseas markets where both local manufacturers wish to grow they could both grow their export sales, ensuring continued manufacturing and employment opportunity here in Australia with views to grow into the future.

Is this impossible? Well before the 86/BRZ I thought it was.
But in this day and age, I believe that it could be done.
Build a car from the Red corner and the Blue corner.
Make a Purple V8 RWD Coupe right here in Australia.

Don't say it's impossible. Let's make it happen.

Opinions Please

Why would the 2 have to combine to make such a vehicle?
I think both parties have enough people and technology to design there own vehicles, and I don't think the sales would be there, hence the Monaro died out and Ford never did it. Just my thoughts on it.
But on another note: XR8 wagon would of been good! (saw that in your sig)

ah the Toyota and Subaru collaboration was also due to Toyota owning a large stake in Subaru via Subaru's parent company Fuji Heavy Industries.
So I don't see how Ford and Holden working together would be similar.
I'd be thinking more along the lines of Ford and Mazda.

I thought it might have been constructive to discuss the option of making an Australian Car, in Australia.

I thought there would maybe be some positive (and the expected negative) opinions about what is a hypothetical scenario which normally wouldn't be explored.

I thought it would be interesting to attempt to blur the lines between rivalries and see if something positive could be done? Or whether anyone would consider it?

Would it have been better to start another Ford/FPV bashing thread?

If a V8 RWD coupe was what you were after, there's the Camaro and Mustang already.

Hmm, don't recall seeing either of those cars as I walked thru the Local Holden and Ford dealership over the weekend - must have run out of brochures, or maybe their demo models were out on test drives?

Yes it is a stupid topic. Another person has already explained the link between Toyota and Subaru which lead to the shared platform:

Ford and GM have no links between the two organisations and therefore such a combined project would never see light of day. They are in direct competition with each other. As these companies are Australian subsidiaries of US companies, the power brokers in Detroit and Dearborn would never approve such a combined project. Name one vehicle on this planet which is a joint venture between Ford and GM!

So - because toyota own 16.5% of a company associated with Subaru - then that made them think - hey lets build a car together??? wow - thats a long bow...

Most people would have said the same thing for Toyota and Subaru, and yet it happened. And now both cars (86 & BRZ) are selling in the same segment of the market, to the same part of the market, and yet they still undertook it.

I'm always interested when people say they can't be done - before anyone's even given it a shot. I wonder how many people told Steve Jobs his ideas were stupid and couldn't be done.

But - of course you're entitled to your opinion - where you've decided to vote "NO" on the above poll. I'm just trying to understand it a little better - so I apologize in advance if i've come across the wrong way.

Good try loftie but forget it, unfortunately there are too many here that wouldn’t have the faintest idea how to have an intelligent discussion about a hypothetical situation, i would be surprised if some of them even know the meaning.....

.

Well technically it could be done, but it will never be done. Ford or Holden have absolutely no requirements to increase their "Australianess". If Ford Australia cant make a car, then they would look to other Ford factories around the world to source the car. If another Ford factory couldn't do it, then maybe they would then go to another car company they have had previous dealings with (like a mazda etc). Only after they have exhasuted these options (and got approval for alot of money from head office), then they might visit the Holden joint venture (but Holden would also have to be pursuing the same sort of strategy). Could be done, but hell would be frozen over before it would be done.

Wow, judging by some of the idiotic replies there really are some half wits on this forum

I think to some degree it's going to become alot more common place to have manufacturers produce vehicles in joint ventures given the economic environment.

It's win win for us as it should lead to affordable niche performance vehicles such as the Toybaru 86/BRZ.

Nissan and Renault have teemed up of late so have Mazda and Fiat

Where's the car?

OT to your post, it's a pity that even though they have gone bankrupt 4 times, they still outsell Ford AU pretty much across the market.

The Mazda and Fiat would be the only one similar (besides Toyota and BMW teaming up for a sports car).
Nissan is owned by Renault.

Below is a diagram showing the relationships between car makers

Not a bad idea but I see a few issues... First being that I would highly doubt GM and Ford USA would allow a sub brand (Holden) and a small local manufacturing arm of the parent company (FoMoCo Aus) to collaborate to build something when both parent companies already have a V8 coupe... Mustang and Camaro.

Secondly, where are the $$ coming from even if by some miracle GM and Ford allowed the venture to go ahead?

Thirdly, even if the previous 2 problems couple be overcome, why would the parent company allow a collaboration vehicle to be exported when neither existing platform has a world wide export program currently?

Finally, I'm sorry to say that from recent form unless everything is thought of, and designed and built by the American parent company, there seems to be no hope in hell of getting it off the ground.

But in my imagination a collaborative coupe would be cool!
