Smile Jaguar Australia has confirmed it will add the XF Sportbrake to its local lineup.

Jaguar Australia has confirmed it will add the XF Sportbrake to its local lineup.

The British car maker initially dismissed the station wagon variant for Australia because our appetite for SUVs has decreased demand for traditional family haulers.

But its local division is currently working on clearing the car for sale here having to re-engineer its child restraint tethering system specifically to meet our local design rules.

"We will bring a limited number of them in next year," said Jaguar Land Rover's Asia-Pacific boss, David Blackhall.

"We think it is important for us to show that we are serious about the development and growth of the Jaguar brand in Australia, so we will are going to do it.

"We are currently working with our colleagues in the federal government about homologating the vehicle for sale here.

"One of the issues we have is with the unique tethering requirements for child restraints in wagon. We have to get that engineered for Australia."

Jaguar is likely to offer the Sportbrake with a diesel-only engine lineup with either the 140kW 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and 202kW 3.0-litre turbocharged V6.

The Sportbrake is clearly part of the XF family, but has been redesigned from behind the front doors that offers a load-lugging cargo area of 550L and an additional 48mm of rear headroom. It also has self-levelling rear air suspension that adjusts according to load weight.

The Sportbrake models are likely to command a premium over their sedan siblings, with final pricing and specifications set to announced closer to its arrival early in 2014.
