Default Rim colour choices

Just interested in what colour rims folks think would look good on my car. It's a red XR8, and the wheels are GT-P 19s, which come with silver paint between the spokes and machine finish on the face of the rim which has now been sanded back as part of some gutter rash repairs I've been doing.

Whichever colour I choose will be used on the whole rim (no masking off sections to retain silver or go a different colour - too much work for little benefit, IMHO).

Now, colour choices I am looking at are:
1. Silver
2. Gloss black
3. Matt Black
4. Satin Black
5. Gold
6. White
7. Anodized red (silver base coat with sort of clear red topcoat)

Here's a pic of my car as it currently is:

I have already chosen which way I am going, but just thought I'd see what others think of different colours.

Ha - nice XR8 - I have it's twin brother running chrome speedy 18's - I have a preference for Silver, nice colour that shows off the rim.

With venom red on a AU - a black finish imo, tends to blend the wheel too much, plus a lighter colour is easier to keep clean.

Good luck with colour choice - hope this helps.

If it was me that was doing it. I'd go matt black. When I saw what the dark argents looked like in matt black I fell inlove.

You know my choice, but for the sake of the thread, Silver FTW!

Cheers,

That style of wheel would look too heavy in black. Mesh or fine spoked wheels look OK in black on red esp with a nice wide polished lip (which of course you don't have either)

I'm unsure about red - it would be difficult to get a red that didn't clash with the car colour and brake caliper colour.

White is a possible - I think I'd have to see them done to know for sure. My initial impression with white is "cheap" looking.

They would be best in silver - or a lighter gold.

i reckon as is, polished up looks good with the red, or like the dark argent go black with polished lip which you aren't wanting to do anyway so polished/silver it is

Personally I'm a fan of black rims, but not so much on red cars. A darker silver might be the go - I think they call it black-chrome or pewter...

I haven't seen it around yet, I've been looking. We'll have to get that Austin chick/girl thing, over here and all go for a beer.

The red could be interesting otherwise leave 'em as is.

When you've finished that you can spend an hour or so laying a bit of turf... ;)

silver ... or brushed/polished silver.
Shadow chrome might be a good look too.

I don't think the other options would suit the vehicle.

RG - Dark Argent colour is one of my favourites, and would hide the brake dust, but I'm sticking to wheel paint for my colour choice (Have used cheaper paints in the past, and while the colour generally works, it doesn't last long - though i could use the VHT wheel clear coat, I suppose). Now you got me thinking!

LOL. That's actually next door's and will be filled eventually with crushed granite/paddy's river gravel/scoria - it's a smallish area between our two driveways.

For everyone that's said leave tham as is - they have had gutter rash repairs using metal filler so need to be painted.

I've been doing prep work on my AU2 XR8 rims and i can say after putting two coats of satin black on one of them, that it will take some really high quality prep work for the satin to look good! I think the satin Black looks great and i will push on with getting the prep work right, but what i'm saying is that Satin exagerates any imperfection in your prep. Even right down to the finest of sanding scratches! So keep that in mind.

Thanks for the heads up. Black shows up everything! But these rims don't have to be perfect - only need to pass the 50m test (OK, 10m test). Silver, black or metallic (dark) grey are my favoured colours thus far.

HLC - was thinking a red pin stripe thing on the rims, rather than the tyres.

Was mucking about the other day with just such a thing in mind, the rim tape was old stuff left over from doing a motorcycle rim and had lost its stick but gave me an idea of what it would look like.

^^^^^That looks good. When rim tape is sticky, does it stay stuck?
