Default Au Boot Strut Mount Rusted

Hi Guys

My AU S1 Fairmont Ghia has rusted the boot strut mount!!!!

The stud bolt which holds the boot strut & mounts to the body on the lower end has rusted through. The mounting point & the bolt have rusted so the strut hangs freely....

The boot is bloody heavy now being held by the left strut only & slams down real hard when trying to close it carefully. Have taken right strut off to minimise damage from the loose strut.

Has anyone out there experienced this on their AU????
Any ideas on how to repair or have had their AU repaired successfully?????

Cheers :

Yep, had the same problem on my AU3 XR6. I made a new bracket to essentially fill the old hole, cut the thread off the ball joint to which the strut connects and welded that to the bracket. I'd post up a pic but I'm at work unfortuntely.

Alternatively, you could weld the ball joint back into the body of your car.

Yeah thanks st33l3y,

Sounds good to me... The only thing I'd want to do a good job if I was tackling it myself!!! U would wanna get a factory finish if you can....

When it comes to welding I'm not overally comfortable & worry I'd probablely
go through the panel!!!!!

I hope to see some pics of your handy work....

Happened on my BA last week too

The metal plate they screw into gave way (never found it) found a nut that suits the thread and a couple of washers (one inside, one outside) and bolted it back in
Had to weld the nut to a piece of wire to hold it, cant get hands in there

There's a thread here somewhere about how to fix it.

Someone should be able to locate it.

Hi Guys,

Got some pics of my rusted mount & the replacement panel from Ford today.

There $25 for the part but not sure how they mount to the body....

Any ideas as the existing would have to be cut/grinded out & new one spot welded???

Cheers

All

Will check the part no. when I get home... At work at the moment & checked the invoice but may be different???

I don't know about fitting price but imagine if the welds etc.. can be unpicked
easily, anyone could do it????

I think its still a bit of work to repair rust/hole in it self, so maybe its a good
alternative!!!

Cheers

So what are you doing here if you have a Commodore?

Shouldn't you be down the pub drowning your sorrows?

the AU is also showing signs of this around its rear mounts but as its a wagon and has rust right around the hinge on both sides :(, would ford carry the part for the wagons?

and also i found a heap of rust in the rear left dogleg today :( any ideas as to wether ford carry the rear doglegs?

ford should have the hinges, if they do have doglegs, it will be at an unbelievably dear price.

the lower ball socket on mine on the rhs had a small amount of rust just enough so when i put a bit of extra force on it while changeing the worn out struts it completely pulled out of the body work, i bought a bit of aluminum angle cut it down to size and mounted it in the channel with a new ball and some matching paint, not pretty but does the job.

Ford no longer even sell the bottom fitting. Gosh they could make a $million.
I priced the socket bolt alone and that was $11. Off to the wreckers to see if they have some bolts that survived fords leaky boot problems.

Mine packed up a few days ago too.

Will have a look at mig welding the ball to another piece of square metal, then welding that to the existing piece.

it`s easy enough to repair except for the paint damage, thats why i did the dodgey way i did it, the bolt in ball you can buy from most bearing places.
