Hey all,
Was out fishing in Balmain in Sydney not sure what the point was called but nice spot on one of the points out that way. Anywho, thinking i'd be baited I started to reel in but it didn't feel quite right. Get the hook to the surface and I have this: http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/bri..._cap_badge.JPG On my hook! (little bit worse for wear but its been in the harbour for a while) Thought wow cool and put it in my pocket, forgot all about it until today when I was flicking through some stuff in my room. Was wondering if anyone knows anyone in Sydney I can take it to? get valued or looked at or something? Would work out to be a fairly good catch if it turns out to be worth something good lol.. Thanks in advance. |

There are collectors out there who trade in this sort of stuff, however yours would have been damaged by sea water, it has no interesting providence other than it has been laying at the bottom of the harbour.
Nice keepsake - give it to the gandkids.

If it were me, I'd do 1 of 2 things. If you visit Canberra, go for a visit to the war memorial and donate it for display. I am sure they would love to add it to their collection, and you know it will be enjoyed by many people for years to come. It's a little bit of war time history. It's a real treasure.
If you want to keep it, i'd get it professionally mounted into a frame with the history of the peice and maybe a photo of a soldier who would have worn this as part of his uniform.

Does it have any identifying markings on it which could lead to tracking down it's owner?
Pretty cool item to reel up from the harbor though. I never catch anything :(

The odds against that must be astronomical.
Is it pre '1927 or post (as per examples above). The mind could run riot imaginig how it may have ended up where it did. I'm no military historian,is this a regiment that is active in Australias' armed forces?For a medal honouring a regiment that has been around since 1800 I would think there was no small amount of military history attached to it and would agree with bucknaked,.. wonderful story

First thing I think of is a stolen haul of medals may have happened recently, and one found its way there somehow. But why would they be in that area/dumped? Still doesn't make much sense. I'd say it's a keeper but if you were I, you'd try to track down it's history just out of interest's sake. Perhaps the person is still alive even, and you could return it to them.
But it could be just as likely they ditched it there themselves, feeling guilt in recieving the medal, or some other feelings of their involvement in the war, which it symbolised. Really, like Zdcol says, the mind could run riot. Who knows. |

Here is some history of the regiment, The Rifle Brigade.
It no longer exists & was part of an amalgamation, or modernisation of the British Army some time ago. The Rifle Brigade
