Had a puncture so pulled over to change it.

Ford Aus don't use a jack like that, their jacks are not much better but are made from slightly thicker steel than that (around 1.6mm - 2.0mm), that one in the picture looks like 0.9mm - 1.1mm. Also note, it is a thin piece of U channel where the failure is and it has buckled, Ford Aus have a slight bend in to make it more like a box frame. I'm guessing that this was for something like a focus or a fiesta.
Either way though, it's absolutely pathetic and I'd be taking it up with the manufacturer. Tell them you're having recurring nightmares and you've experienced loss of libido. In Australian courts, saying you've lost your libido is usually worth an additional $50,000 to your claim. Thank God you weren't hurt.

Have had that happen to me a few times. The jack that came with my car had a 10 degree angle on it already

Dad's XF jack looked similar. The base had a toothed arch that allowed the jack to be placed on an angle.
Last time he used it, car buckled over and the jack base got jammed into one of the extreme angles it supported and he never told anyone (a man of few words he is)... Found out when I used his car and got a flat...... Don't know if it was the standard one but I'm pretty sure it was. |

that's why i usually stick the spare tire under the car while putting on wheel nuts or what ever. if the jack falls over, you can still get one under it to re jack it up (and might not crush your foot).
of course, it wont help if the jack collapses and is useless like in this case. i think i'll just call roadside assistance.

My Ba jack did that and I work next to a wreckers and they don't sell Ba jacks because of the reason

Regardless of what model it is the Ford jacks are rubbish, I refuse to use them unless I cannot use anything else.

When underneath a car, ALWAYS USE STANDS.
Don't have some? They costl ike $50 for a pair, carry a pair in your car. Poor quality stuff, they should follow the approach of Mercedes and include a small bottle jack I reckon. We work on Sprinters and they've got one. |

This is why I invested in a trolley jack and axle stands. A few hundred dollars or your life, it's not hard to choose people.

it is indeed a ford ba ute stand as stamped on it. It was chocked up with handbrake on a level surface.
Just looked at the safe lifting limit on it. 1550kgs. It started creaking then buckling under pressure. |

Definately agree the factory jacks are garbage emergency use tyre changing only jeebus you cant expect a decent jack in a cheap car like a falcon

Buy a semi-cheap bottle jack like a Masada and keep it when you sell the car.
That said I've used Falcon jacks over the ages and never had a problem, but that one dodgy jack you use could very well be your last...

Seen it happen to a Territory jack too.. Had to get one from a TE Magna in the end, which actually supported the territory. Amazing a jack rated for a car that weighs 1500KG is better than fords crap.

A couple of years back I was passing the ??Cooroy?? exit on the Bruce Highway (I was headed sth). I noticed a HJ/X/Z one tonner with its front way too low parked on the on ramp. Couldnt see too much as the grass between me and the car obscured the road surface, and as it turns out a tad more was obscured. I didnt think much of it other than a Holden dumped on its discs, and apparently neither did anyone else.
The following day I heard on the news that the owner was found dead underneath it. Jack collapsed. They said he was there for hours before anyone noticed. Dont do it folks, its not worth it. I often just use two old rims laid flat under the wheels, or stands if a wheel has to come off. The rims tend to not get in the way like stands can when Im underneath. |

no too ways about it those scissor jacks are a dangerous bit of gear, , never get under a car supported by one, i have had them strip the thread and come down in an almighty hurry, and failing in other ways too , well not a ford one fail (yet) but you should not trust any of them.

Guys for like $50.00 you can get a bottle jack from superschit auto. It's rated to around 3 tonnes and is a hell of a lot stronger than the scissor of death jacks that manufacturers put in their car.
That being said, anyone who gets under a car supported by a scissor jack IS a moron. Always use the spare under the sill so if it gives way, it will crash onto the spare and not you. Never take it for granted, and ask yourself; would I be able to lift this thing off me if the jack gave way? It only takes a moment of inattention to change your life so safeguard yourself by taking precautions like I mentioned before - put the spare wheel under the sill in case the jack fails.

Any person that gets under a car using the ford factory jack, and consequently gets injured has no right for a court case.
Ford owners manual  That said, I have seen other vehicle onwers manuals state that while the vehicle is on the jack you must have the spare wheel under the sill in case of jack failure. |
