Default ABS warning light on

My 1999 AU shows the ABS warning light on the dash. The brakes are still OK and the ABS still works OK. I'm 2 hours from a Ford dealer and the local mechanics just throw their arms in the air saying "no idea!"
Anybody out there got any clues before I have to take a trip into town?

what, for abs? pull each wheel off and check the "tone rings" they are part of the hubs, basically a notched ring with a sensor at one side of it. make sure these aren't dirty or broken. there will be 4 of them, 1 on each wheel. then go from there
