Default Whisky

Hi Guys,

Somewhere I saw a thread that discussed, amongst other issues, early Australia whiskies.

I am 65 and I remember as a kid with my Dad in hotels say late 1950s/early 1960s he would sometimes order a whisky.

My Dad always lived "on the edge" as far as everything including alcoholic spirits, and Johnny Walther was thought to be way out of his class.

He used to drink an Aussie whisky. I remember he would buy half and quarter bottles.

Do any of you guys what brand this whiskey may have been??

I am trying to put a narrative history of my life, and to be honest, I don't have much time remaining.

Regards
Doug

I suggest you Google whisky forums. I go to forums for any information, I have a very old Australian made butcher knife and have been searching everywhere to find info but no luck so far.
I'm your age as well and yes, the years are ticking by.

Then there was the Corio Distillery in Geelong, established by the Distillers Company of Edinburgh, at a time when there was a worldwide shortage of whisky.

Norm Phillips, who worked there for more than 30 years and was general manager when the distillery closed in 1980, was told the brief from head office was to "make whisky no better than the worst in Scotland". This edict was followed religiously. In its heyday, a Corio and Coke was one of the cheapest shouts around; a rough, blended whisky not for the discerning palate.

says it all really. I think that the reason I don't like whisky probably has something to do with the fact that Corio 5 Star was first whisky I tried.
