Default AU Diff gone, what now?

Hi All.

After a long weekend replacing the front end's wheel arm section thingo, we've realised that my AU's diff is also gone, and probably worse than the front end's problem.

Long story short, anyone know if the EF's diff will go straight in to an AU, as I have one down the back of the yard in the old car?

If they're both live axle then the centres are a direct swap.

Then you do have live axle (non IRS) so it is a straight swap of the centres.

Posted by Xcabbi, Does it slap or rattle? Rattle is more to do with timing chains and tensioners. Slap is more to do with lifters, rings, bearings or GENIII boat anchors

Don't mind my lacking terminology. So we swap the centers, but keep the arms that the axles run through and re-attach them?

Why do you continue to show your ignorance; posts like this (yours) throw confusion where there should be none. If it's not an XR, and not a Fairmont Ghia, then it has Live axle (ie solid diff), NOT IRS.

Teknoslasher - when swapping the centres over, you need to ensure that the gears mesh/lap properly and there's no play etc, so if you're unsure what you're doing, it might be time to take it to a diff specialist to get the work done.

Kind of, but not really. The "arms" are attached to the centre part of the diff. This is what is referred to as a live axle because the whole diff moves when you hit a bump; with IRS, in theory, only the axle that cops the bump moves.

RG is talking about the internals when he refers to the "centres". You retain the AU axles but use the E series gears from the centre part of the diff.

Thanks very much JC, clears it up. My old man knows what to do with pulling it all apart, but had asked me to find out if they'd be the same to avoid the cost of going to the wreckers to buy a second hand one and or removing the old one thinking the ef's would go straight in to it.

And pulling apart is generally easy; it's the putting back together I sometimes struggle with.

An EF diff (the entire thing) will bolt straight in aswell, just making your AU have Pre-AU offset

don`t forget to check if the ratio`s are the same on the ef diff as on the original(same amount of teeth on the larger gear(crownwheel) and the small one that meshes with it(pinion).

No, the only AU's to get IRS were the XR8, XR6 VCT, Fairmont Ghia & Fairlane...although I think I may be missing one from that list.

thats why i stuck out of this one to many people think they know because someone told them so.

some people need to read gregory's more often and become familiar with their cars.

also mate when doing things such as diff make sure you buy new bearings and shims its always good to know you have replaced things like that just for piece of mind.

Well, at this point we have some good news. I've managed to pick up a diff from another forte, as well as the tail shaft. Best part is, its for free after some great business talking from my old man. They're apparently in really good nick, so fingers crossed all will be well.

I would like to drop an LSD centre into bog standard au2 live axle futura sedan to help with towing etc.
On ebay I can get a reco 28spline lsd hemi and the seller informs me that all I will need to do is "use your crownwheel gear off your original hemi & bolt it on to the lsd hemi"
So,is it that easy?
Are there any pitfalls apart from changing the oil to LS90?
