Question Oxymoron

G'day all

I've been finding more and more that people(mainly the younger generation) are using the term "skid" instead of "burnout" at the drags ,car shows etc.
To me this is a true oxymoron and I do find it irritating... what happened to the terms like doing a snakey or doing a doughnut or even to a lesser extent doing a roll back , all are clearly defined in it's description in words and on the bitumen (not public roads of course) I would like to see the term power burnout used at shows etc....... or am I just an old fuddy duddy that needs to get with the times :

i feel ya mate i hate hearing the word turbo and how people complain oh he caught me off boost blah blah blah. i explained to my son about how not everything is about speed. my old man has a hq gts monaro with a 350 chev and some mustang i think its a 65 hardtop with a 259 or whatever it is(its a lhd). there not that fast by todays standars but they get more looks then some turbo ricer.

and whats the go with p platers im not having a go but they go out buy these cars do up the stereos, putting on huge rims and loud exhaut systems and lowering them super low. then they sell them for a fracton of what they spent on the gear. then they go out and buy a turbo or a v8 car. wouldent it be better to buy a bog stock car then sell it and then buy your v8 or turbo car when you get ya opens? you would save plenty more cash for a better car. its only 3 years?

im not having a go im just trying to get in the mindset of a p plater.

and dont get me started on these stickers. i can understand the southern cross i was in the army so i like being patriotic but what is with this unit and jetpilot? apparently you can buy unit hats too.

Well Im 24 and use the terms Burnout, Fishtail, doughnut and roll back. A skid sounds like something theyd do in their underwear after a real car blows the doors off their ricer

I guess Im just not fooly sic enough...oh well.

Does anyone still use the word "Broggy" ?
I said it to a kid once on his bicycle and he screwed his face at me and said "Thats so lame"

if I was driving and said broggy to a kid on a bike, and he told me I was lame, I'd laugh and say, who's really lame, you on the bike or me in my car?

Seriously though, I occasionaly say skid, but try to say burnout, as more people get the term burnout than skid.

I'll tell you what's ironic: Bemoaning the corruption of the mother tongue to a bunch of rev-heads in a web forum, and using a big word you don't know the meaning of!

Jetpilot and Unit are a brand of clothes I'm pretty sure, one of my workmates has a white hoodie with a huge-*** "JETPILOT" print on it.

With P plate laws, people don't want to wait 4 years before they can do stuff, generation Y wants everything now. I want my V8 now but I can't legally, give it 4 years and I probably won't give a rats *** about V8s or modifying cars because I never got my taste of it. I have a crapload of disposable income now, will I at 22? Probably not, a house will be on the agenda, I reckon the modifying scene in youngins will take a dive, thats all I'm going to say, I'm not going to get into debating laws because thread will get locked.

Also 4 years looks like freakin ages away for me haha.

As opposed to the front wheels which most "hEkTiK" cars they drive would normally be spinning....

I was about to say that.... a skid is akin to a brake lockup. Nothing at all to do with smokin' em up.

i'm 23 and use the words mentioned in the OP, except roll back lol...

but i only use the word skid when someone hits the brakes, as in "hit the skids" or "look at those skid marks into the tree" or "i have skid marks after the turbo kicked in mid drift" ;)

When I hear "skid" I think of the squeeling sound made at an attempted burnout that doesn't make smoke.

As far as I knew, a skid was uncontrolled, as in if you lost it going around a corner you would 'go into a skid'. A burnout is done from a standing start, with the objective being to spin the rear wheels and make smoke/noise/people cranky.
