Default AU CD players

I have a series 1 XR6 and a series 3 wagon both with factory CD players.
Both cars do not play burnt CD's but a freind of mine had a series 2 that he says did play burnt CD's. So am I doing somthing wrong when I burn CD's or don't the factory CD players play burnt CD's?

The AU factory units are pathetic. Some will play burnt, some won't. Others won't play at all. Easiest thing, replace it with an aftermarket one

i wouldnt even worry about the exsisting cd player, i had a 6 stacker which was a waste.
i havnt put a new cd player in my xr8 yet but i found a nice little unit from jaycar
part Cat:QM-3787
for $349 i think its a great little unit.

it didnt even bother putting any cd's in my 6 stack in dash unit when I bought my car based on the negative feedback of these OEM units. I got it replaced with an ////ALPINE cda-9986 head unit instead. Love it.

Dont bother mucking around with them, and just replace it. Its a piece of p!$$

If you look on the back of the cd... they will genearlly be a light lime\yellow colour... I have found the darker the colour (verbatim cd's used to be dark blue and great for this) but ive found they read better...

Just a thought..

hi guys
a lot of info in this thread is correct. stock au cd players are terrible. if you can play normal cds, you can play burnt CDs. Just make sure you use good quality CDs and burn them at 16x speed or slower, to ensure you get a nice, strong burn. Some of the diehards will tell you 4x only.

Even a brand new toyota (ok, my info is 4 years old) will only read burnt CDs that are burnt at 16x or slower, so it probably has nothing to do with the laser degrading over time.

However, if your CD player won't play anything at all, chuck it.

I appreciate the info about the slower burning speed, but as I can't be botherd burning all my CD's again, and the factory players arn't that good, I think I'll put this in: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2008-Pioneer-...QQcmdZViewItem

Will that unit fit the dash's slightly curved facia or will the bottom corners protrude? If you know what i mean..... I would like to go double din to but finding something that will fit/suit the dash, mmm.

I personally think the standard head units are pretty good, i've had a lot of aftermarket stereos over time - pioneer, sony, alpine, jvc, and they all stop working after about 4 years, my car is 10 years old and the 6 disc stacker works 100% fine no probs, and i know of 2 other AU's and there's are still working fine too.

I know my single din Alpine unit sticks out at the bottom a bit. But it doesnt look too bad. I can only imagine how it would look on a double din.

As has been said, try a slower burn speed or perhaps try a different brand & type of recordable disc.

My S2 single-disc unit seemed to work fine no matter what I put in with the exception of a couple of discs but they were very temperamental discs in whatever unit I put them in.

But I got so sick of burning a new CD every time I went for a drive (stupidly big MP3 collection!) I got rid of my CD player altogether :P Have only regretted it once or twice when I've borrowed or bought a CD and wanted to listen to it in the car and couldn't.

i had an aftermaket pioneer cd player in my car and i hated the look of it in there, didnt suit the dash one bit. so i took it out and brought a replacement double din premium sound unit to replace the one i took out.

mine plays burn cds fine, is 6 stacker in dash, and if i want to play my mp3 and cant be bothered burning cd's all the time, ive got an fm transmitter double sided taped to my dash and i can put songs on my ipod and run them through the radio.

Yeh the CD players are rotten!!! I wanted to pull mine out and throw it out the window it ****ed me off that much!
It played certain brand of burnt CD's (it could be the speed thing on the CD not 100%) and spat it out whenever it felt like it. Arggggg I'm so glad that was the first thing I got rid of out of my car.
