Default First drive after mods thread...

When we get mods done its always that first drive after that either impresses us or disappoints us. Whether it be a Pod filter or a supercharger setup, we are all itching for that first drive.

So please describe your mod and impression(s) after first drive.

-I had my diff gears done in my Ls1. Was itching for the first drive and it didnt disappoint. Feels much faster than before, almost dangerous on full throttle and turned the car into a real weapon. Absolutely bolts away off the mark and almost impossible to avoid the wheels spinning as it changes up into 2nd. Great mod and enjoyed the first drive.

-When I had my Xr8 charged, I picked it up and it was raining and 5pm, so all I could do was crawl along in heavy traffic listening to it whine away. Had to tip toe all the way home in the wet.

I put skinnier front tyres on my XW recently, it felt like I just installed power steering afterwards.

Lowered my old AU, felt like I had installed invisible train tracks that appeared when cornering and was very impressed.

Exhaust on my VY LS1, that first startup left me disappointed... about 2 weeks later when it carbon'ed up I started to really like it. Intake was next and the induction road and better throttle response was awesome and noticable.

Not allowed to mod the f6 yet... but I imagine going to 400rwhp+ will be a bit like going from my v8 to a turbo... everything else will just feel slow.

Took out the really, really tired 302 and put in a freshly built 351 with a bunch of performance mods. After letting it run in for a few drives, the first merge onto the highway was glorious.

I dont remember all of them

but most recently, I converted the mrs 38 from cross plys to radials, put a taller rear tyre and replaced the leaver action shocks with teliscopic gass shocks

that changed EVERY thing, it drives in a straight line and pulls up in a streaight line, infact the brakes feel crap now becasue you can consentrate on stoping it as opposted to concentrating on keeping it in a streight line at the same time

the car i most remember doing mods to was my 1967 xr falcon 500, white with vinyl roof, it was my first v8 and gave me the most joy (and fines)
fairmont interior and obligitory 12 slotters, it had a minor engine problem and i decided to fixer up a tad, to make a long story short it went from 2 barreled carter carbureted engine to a holley 650 double pumper, mild cam, high rise manifold, twin point transistorized distributor with keyed adjustable advance curve, twin thermo fans, genie extractors, breakable oil pump drive, high volume oil pump, high volume fuel pump, 8 mm leads, reco`d heads that already had oversize valves in, ford re manufactured short motor built in geelong ($457.00 and 2.00 for delivery to my door in reservoir ) done in my driveway with an apprentices tool kit(not very much ),
after much preparation i turned the key and it started straight up and sounded very tuff indeed, it made hair stand up on the back of my neck,

when i eventually took it for a squirt after running it in a bit, apart from a bit of hesitation off the mark from being over carbed , once above about 1500 rpm ......oh baby it boogeyed for a little v8, it went very well, and every time i turned the key it put a smile on my face.

I had a 600+ hp Windsor built after having an old near stock 351, and 1st drive the new motor went worse than the old engine. Wouldn't even turn the tyres in 2nd. I was not happy

I took my BF Typhoon in for mods back in 2006.
A 3.5 inch difilippo system from the turbo back, walbro pump, injectors and tune.
Had a 150km drive home and took it easy with traffic most of the way home but could tell the difference sitting under my right foot.
About 5km from home I became impatient with a slow car in front and gave it a kick as I pulled out to overtake.
It really caught me out, I was all over the place and covered them with smoke as I went screaming past trying to keep it in a straight line.
I think the extra 70rwkw was the most I have ever gained in one go and left a smile on my face for a long time.

Agreed. When I put one on my old XR8 I think I nearly had a crisis..

Also flash tuning the 5 and wheel spinning up the road in 3rd made me crack up like a little girl.. To someone on the side of the road a focus lighting it up through 3 gears must of been a real wtf moment haha

When I had headers and a full exhaust fitted I was happy. First drive and the first 30 secs left me disappointed. My beautiful induction roar was gone. Instead I was left with the most glorious sounding exhaust systems that took me back to the late 60's and 70's when sixes ran a lukey sports system. I am now happy again and will remain so.

Cheers Vincenzo

Usually all my mods have been impressive on my 78' XC 250 xflow

1. When i upgraded from a stock exhaust to a twin 2" split straight from the extractors the first drive was only meant to take 2 minutes came back 1 hour later haha.
2. Lowering the car with fatter tyres proved to be a success.
3. My latest mod attaching a brand new 350 holley and replacing the stromberg the power increase was so significant i couldn't have hoped for any better.

So all my mods have turned out successful i must be on a lucky run.

When I had the exhaust installed on my BA - there was such a huge torque increase afterwards.

No other mods on any of my other cars made so much difference.

XR6 661, where did you get your pussy magnets? I could do with some!

In summary, its all good !!!

Anyway, here are my first impressions....

- The motor now revs more freely
- Throttle response is sharper
- Acceleration can be described as stronger, smooth and torquey
- The car obviously pulls harder, right across the rev range as an improvement on the stock headers
- Down change in gears (4sp auto) is smoother
- The sound is certainly different, a bit more 'raspy'. I prefer the old note so far, but these pipes have yet to carbon up.
- The exhaust note will change again, in time.
- The old "blip of hesitation" at 3000rpm is now gone... she just pulls straight through
- 2000rpm to 4500rpm is awesome
- Seemingly not too hot in the engine bay (Saturday was 30 deg + !)
- Engine running temp fine
- The car accelerates really nicely in 4th gear, say 100 to 130km/h, with a soft "ease-on" of the pedal. (This is one of my fave improvements)

All in all, a great addition to the I6. Stoked with the results!! Love this car !!

Will report more later after more driving.....

When I went from driving my car on stock AU series 1 brakes & suspension.

Next time I drove my car it had Koni Yellow adjustable shocks & brembo 6 pots on the front (Series 2 upgrade). All of a sudden, I was able to feel through my seat if the car just ran over a penny :P and testing the brakes too, no cars behind me, slam on the brakes, wait hang on, I swear I was moving about three seconds ago...

Very interesting!

Can't wait until I start working on the engine and transmission lol

Thumbs up Re: First drive after mods thread...

Hi all, I completed my first (DIY) mod last weekend - installed an SS inductions intake and K&N (non-pod) air filter on my AU1 XR8. Fantastic subtle improvement - at speed I can now rev an extra 850+ rpm. Breathing out next...

I remember a few years ago when I did my first 'performance' mod to my car. It was a big secondary intake I made at school. Basically a massive aluminium square tube that sits behind the headlight.

I remember the first time I drove with it on. I had just put it on and it was later afternoon.
I wanted to wait till I had a bit of free road to give it a go. And being peak hour time, the roads where full.
I was driving for about 25 odd mins without going over 2,500 rpm. And nothing seemed different at all. I was sure I wasted my time and the $8 for the aluminium.

Anyway, came to a clear straight road, and put on half throttle working up the rev range. As the revs built up past 2500 rpm could start to hear a change of tone. Once it got to 3k this ridiculous howl like nothing I had heard before came out from the depths of hell and overtook everything I had to focus on. I squeezed the pedal a bit harder and as the revs built, so did the intake noise as well as my smile. I drove around for quite a while just listening to the sound. At that time my life was perfect.
