Default Ford - Manual or Auto

Simple poll, people will always think the version they have chosen is the best, (that's just human nature), and I think the debate has been done allready but I am curious as to how the numbers actually stack up compared to each other.

So do you own a manual or an auto Ford / FPV

Lets just vote and let the numbers do the talking

My current falcon is an auto (it was a good deal at the time) but I have had manuals previously and there is no way you can compare them. Honestly it transforms the car from a relatively lazy sedan to something that has a bit of character.

But I would say the same for any car, Falcon right through to a lowly Barina.

So I wont vote, but given the choice manual every time. This might be a forgone conclusion when you look at whats available in manual via Ford...the bulk is auto only which is a shame.

Well I love a Manual. But y GS is an auto after reading all the goss on here I decided to go with the auto. I had a Manual FG XR8 and the gearbox was horrible. Clunky and crunchy.

I still don't see the fuss with the Auto though? It's not smooth at all and it feels like it sucks away some of the power... I drove my brothers old VT SS Auto and it honestly felt as smooth as the ZF so not sure what all the fuss is about.

And what's with the ZF forcibly shunting in to the next gear if you short shift in Manual mode ?

I have auto Fezz and Fairmont Ghia..autos I consider safer than manuals in Brisbane traffic. You only have to think about braking and steering..But country cities/towns manual would be ok.

After the issues the 6 speed autos have i decided on a manual fg turbo ute, would have preferred the auto because they are faster but the manual is more reliable and is pretty fun to drive.

Traction control programming will shift you into the next gear early if there's massive wheelspin Stazza. Your's is tuned right ?
These boxes are designed to handle specific limit's of torque, I understand the ZF in the SC FPV's is rated at 600 nm's.

It would depend on what I was going to use the car for. If it was a daily peak hour shuffler, it would be an auto. Otherwise, it would be manual all the way.

Auto because it's quicker. I've had a manual FG turbo and now have an auto one.

No comparison really.

The Holden 4 speed auto is one of the roughest, dumbest and worse autos ever. The 4 speed BTR was light years ahead of it let alone the ZF.

Yours must have some serious issues if you think its as smooth as one out of a VT.

^^ Couldn't agree more. Of course if one tunes their SC car to within an inch of its life and then drives it like its stolen the ZF's bound to feel pretty second hand after a while.

Very happy with my ZF gearbox. There's a reason Rolls Royce, Bentley, BMW and a host of other top line manufacturers use them...

After driving manuals for the last 24 years, I got my XR50 in auto. Mainly because from the research I did, the auto was better.

If we had've bought a 4cyl car of some description (e.g. Forester), then I most likely would've bought a manual again. As the auto are too slow.

But the ZF and 6 cyl engine matched each other perfectly. And I was ready finally to drive an automatic car

Even though the 6 sp auto in my Territory is a great transmission, I still love a real manual, and when I get my next V8 it just has to be manual.

I own an auto, doesn't necessarily mean I think its the best choice.

Next car will probably be a manual, I've never owned one as a daily. If it's another V8 it will definitely be a manual - fun and noise factor.

People that say auto because of traffic/daily you clearly need to get lessons... A manual in traffic isn't rocket science...

Our Territory is the 6 speed ZF coming up 3 years old now. Lovely gearbox and suits the car to a tee.

My BA GTP was a 5-speed manual; real easy to drive and though I sold her in April I can still clearly remember the snarl from the Herrod exhaust system in 3rd gear when running down the M4. Ah, bliss!!

I've decided to go auto for my next FPV (R-Spec) as I really enjoyed the test drive. (that, plus wifey has hinted she wants to be able to drive the next one!)

Auto for me and probably always will be, manuals are fun to drive but I'd never buy one. Put it in D and let the car do the rest, nice and easy.
