Default What Actually Is 'Unopened'?

We hear so much about 'unopened' cars I thought I'd ask a few questions. Like the most obvious one which is just what unopened actually means.

Like do we accept that replacing major components such as flywheel units (in manual that means the flywheel/clutch and in autos it means converter and flex plate)?

Where does the line sit in relation to the engine? I really think that a general understanding should exist similar to what Group A used to do for example.

The 'unopened' is in regards to the engine only. You can run a highstall, low diff gears and drag suspension and still be unopened. The LS1 guys now include valve springs as unopened .. not sure if I agree with it but that's their call I spose.

I agree with you about LS1's valve springs my opinion it's been opened, the motor ain't factory anymore. They classify it as just reliablity mod.

The way I see it: Any mod that touches oil is classed as "opened"

I see anything from diff gears to clutches as an opened category. The unopened category should be the ability of the tuner to tune a vechile with all mechanical moving bits including driveline the way it left the factory.Only then we would see the basic product and tuners abilities.

It does if the average person is after a certain type of bolt on for his or her own vechile.

Smile Unopened

I'm thinking unopened was a word used when all we had was bolt on stuff like CAI and exhaust ETC. Unopened has to mean not to remove things like rocker covers, head and inlet manifolds. Adding bolt on stuff to the outside of the engine to make engine run at it best in stock form would be closest to the meaning. I suppose that would mean flywheel, pulleys, exhaust & helix.

Stall converter =
Unopened =
CAI =

I think the "can't touch oil" line regarding unopened has been accepted for a while. The LS1 boys changing valve springs for reliablity is really cheeting the unopened terminology. BOSS owners could claim new CobraR internals as a "reliability" item to spin the motors past 6500 on the LS1 philosophy.

Most of these "Valve spring only" LS1's also have a rocker ratio change, which dramatically changes valvetrain effects, having the effect of a higher lift cam with a faster opening/closing ramp.

I have seen these make up t0 16rwkw on an LS1, and because of power to weight, thats the equivalent of 25rwkw in a Boss. so its good for a couple of tenths........

Have to agree with that but ad a bit to it.
"Any ACTIVE part that touches oil and is not a standard part for that car from the factory"

Basically, if the car has got a non standard part that is touching oil and is an active component (this removes the small things like rocker covers, dip sticks and the likes which have minimal impact) then its opened. This has to include different heads, cams, stalls, diffgears etc. Basically, if its not how the car came from the factory and touching oil....its opened.

Didn't you hear the tick tick ticking in my engine last time? Thats cos its got no friggin oil in it. I decided to run it sans oil so that any mod I do is classed as unopened. :party3:

Oil filters are a consumable. It could be argued that changing a head gasket would also be a mod but it is a consumable too. They are not "active" components.

What about changing the inlet manifold. I would classify it as a bolt on mod and it doesn't touch oil.

I had a great laugh today flicking through an old Street Machine mag. A guy with a 9 second LS1 ute is quoted more orl ess as saying the engine was basically stock. Well, other than the inlet manifold, worked heads, camshaft, etc etc. So really the only thing left that was stock was the crank rods pistons and block.

LOL...
