Default No more Aussie made fridges

Had a bit of a sigh this morning when I read this,

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-2...-close/5046580 ,

Another victim of cheaper O/S labour, Bought a brand new fridge 2 months ago and the main criteria was it had to be aussie made so we got a kelvinator , Try so damn hard to support local manufacture by buying aus made but geez it`s getting hard..

Absolutely ridiculous that Australian manufacture is heading towards zero, and the governments are doing nothing about restricting cheaper imports in some way. I've always bought Westinghouse Aus made fridges, the new oven is Electrolux, made in Aus as well.

Even Heinz soups, made in NZ from local and imported ingredients. Disgraceful.

Gerry Harvey says "if your not buying Aussie made...why"?

Last I checked most of Harvey Normans products were imports. LOL

This also means if I want to work for an Aussie company, I need a visa!

Don't know what I will do when the Westinghouse dies, there is only about 20 years life left in it.

Australia can never compete in this kind of market as I have said previously in car manufacturing threads. What Australia excels in is niche design and manufacturing, small run specialised production that most "cheap " countries aren't prepared to do. the sweatshop countries we can't normally compete only want to manufacture high volume goods that they can churn out like sausages.
Australia has a proven track record in specialised design and manufacturing and this is where our manufacturing future lies not in cars , consumer electronics and whitegoods. this is actually a very lucrative field with room for further expansion , money from Govco that currently goes to prop up dying unstainable manufacturing that will eventually end regardless of grants should be used to develop these markets further.

My old fridge (now the beer fridge) is a Westinghouse that my parents bought 2nd hand about 30 years ago. The plastics inside have worn out over time (ie. I can't put stuff in the doors because the shelves would fall out) but mechanically it hasn't skipped a beat. That's why when I bought a new fridge a couple of years ago, I bought a Westinghouse. I doubt it'll last as long but so far so good!

Yes it worries me too mate, apart from the employment and skills loss, this is just another nail in the coffin to our being self sufficient and our ability to do stuff here, and there will come a time when we need to be self sufficient, and we just won't be able too.
It is no problem for pollies, this is called restructuring, but they will go away with their perks and pensions regardless of the people that get the bullet..

I've only owned 1 fridge, bought it second hand off a mate about 15 years ago. It was old even then, in fact she bought it second hand.
It's a Kelvinator 336. Solid, quiet and cold. Massive radiator, obviously built for Australian conditions.
It's a pre auto defrost model, so I defrost it about twice a year = no prob. and on the advice of a mate, I Vaseline the rubber door seal once a year, apparently helps keep the rubber supple.

This is very worrying....soon there will no longer be ''oh yeah my dad worked there for 30 years and ill probally do the same'' gone are those days :(

Everything is going cars, timber, food, pretty much all manufacturing and the ones that stay running are ran by the US and they dont care if you dont have a job at the end aslong as they make profit.

Seems making the fridge last longer has exacerbated the problem as there would be less turn over so less profit so they leave Australia double edged sword I'd say

Not the first, won't be the last. Vale to another iconic manufacturer in Australia disappearing. We've got a number of Electrolux appliances in our house and when we renovated the kitchen in our old house, we purchased Electrolux appliances.

When will this end? I guess when there is no more industry in Australia.

One of the reasons why we need the NBN. One thing Australia has is a deep and broad 'brain pool'. For a small population in a huge country, it required good old Aussie know how and can do (and fair go) to build the nation. A country's greatest resource is its people.
On the surface it looks bad, but soon will be the day when cars have gone the way of the dinosaurs (or at least, the horse and buggy).

yes madaya......people power is a very large machine.

if we only cared as a group, but we get tied up in our own little world and let things happen.

the country is getting sliced up like banana cake and sold off, our resources are being given away, our industries are dying, homeless are gaining in number.

but how many of us actually sit and write to our member, how many of us stand up and say

"we aint taking this no more"..........unfortunately not enough obviously, so those that sell, sell, those that take, take.

the world is fast becoming a place where humans are no longer welcome.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - this country will end up as Paul Keating's Banana Republic inside of a generation. But of course according to all the free trade sycophants that's quite ok; we don't need industry, or manufacturing capacity, or agriculture, or anything that means someone gets their hands dirty, the mining boom will save us for the next 50 years and everyone can transition to more "efficient" industries like tourism.

Half the problem is they have been garbage for the last 10 years or so - cheap chinese compressors, cheap plastics etc

For similar money (or less) you can get a korean or similar made with better quality parts and big warranties.

The canning company in Bathurst is to review its operations in 2016.

Most likely our food will be sent overseas to be processed and then sent back here.

If everyone went out and spent $20 on canned Aussie foods it would help the industry quite a bit.

Ive got a Kelvinator..its green all over, must be 30 or 40 years old? Works a charm, plastics are still perfect, everything is, and i really really hope it doesn't die..but i dare say it'll outlive Aussie manufacturing..and maybe the Australian dream too by the way things are headed...

Well, in late 2015 or early 2016 I'm going to go out and buy myself a new Westinghouse fridge. I just hope that they see sense to respect the heritage that is the Australian fridge and release the Grand Cooler version that they should have done years back.

Even if they don't, this will be the last of it's breed and having one of the last Westinghouses built will surely see it become a collector's item that our kids, and theirs, will look back on with much nostalgia. Guaranteed to be a collector's item once manufacturing ceases.

Sorry, someone had to do it.......

Actually they reviewed operations this month and are scaling back operations as of next year. 110 people out of work from April. I can tell you they wont be sending food from here oversea for processing, they will just source it from there, Goodbye Aussie Farmers. Unfortunately we cant compete against places that pay $2 an hour. Labour costs, utilities and cheap imports, are what is killing Australian Manufacturing.

No it's not, it's all going to plan thanks to the Political correct god and the New World Order.
Don't you know you all voted for it.

Perhaps the Productivity Commission's Inquiry into car industry support is a timely opportunity to point out to the policy boofheads and bureaucrats that industry and manufacturing in Australia, generally, is hurting and that a wider ranging review of the manufacturing sector in Australia is needed if the Government wants to be able to have a country that can still make its own stuff.
