Default not again....

Had a bit of drama with the Fairlane over the weekend....

Over the long weekend, the missus and I head off for a mini holiday at my grandfathers beach house in St Leonards... all was well over the weekend... the car performed faultlessly...

Untill the drive home... on the way back, we decide to detour through lara into the you yang ranges, in search of ford's proving grounds... Eventually we find ourselves in the you yang national park... where the radiator promptly exploded... :P

I pulled up and as soon as I switched the engine off, steam began pouring out from under the bonnet, first thing that went though my mind was visions of a fireball under the bonnet ala, my old NC... luckilly, it was only the passenger side radiator tank, which split clean down the middle dumping all the coolent on the ground.

I called my old man, and 3 hours later he turned up with an EA radiator, as it was all he could find on such short notice... All went well, untill we noticed that the drivers side tank of the EA radiator is slightly different... ****... we'll have to swap the drivers side tank from the NF's radiator....

Eventually, we got it in, and I could nurse the thing back home...

Moral of the story? V8 Fairlanes hate me, and check your cooling system before summer starts... ;)

Does anyone know if EF I6 radiators interchange with the V8 ones? I dont know how long this EA radiator is going to hold with the swapped side tank... as it was re-crimped with a pair of vice grips...

well i know that the EA-ED 6 and V8 radiators are the same thing, maybe the same goes for EF/EL

I hope so... I can imagen the quoted price difference from ford if I asked for a V8 Fairlane radiator versus a I6 Gli radiator...

Anyone know a rough price on a brand new radiator? i'll be calling around tomorrow for a new one...

Bad luck there! At least it ended up in a better state than the NC though. EA series 1 had a different radiator to series 2 (series 2 didn't have a return line back to the coolant resevoir or something like that), so maybe you have a series 1 version (mind you I also have a series 1 radiator in my series 2)

There were the same amount of coolent lines between the EA and NF, just the hose diameter on one pipe was different, and one pipe left the tank at right angles compared to the original one.

Mate thats harsh, and of all the places it could happen.

Did you drive around the dirt track that borders the you yangs? I did in my last EA, that was a bad idea, rattled the crap out of the car.

I assume the PG's gates were shut anyway?

We drove into the park, up to the "Big Rock" picnic area, and thats when it blew... we were going to drive around the you yangs... luckily I wanted to stop and stretch my legs! :P

The fun part was rolling the car down the steep hills with no power steering or power brakes! I suppose its better than rolling it up the hills... :P

with that thread title i thought the worst for your NF dude!

anyway, there always a debate on the 6 vs V8 radiators
ive always been led to believe the V8 rads have more cooling fins per inch.....

I know where ya coming from, but I think thats more to do with old school V8;s, 3 core and all of that.

There might be a slight difference in e series ones, but it would be pretty marginal.

Well, when pulling both the NF V8, and the EA I6 radiator apart to swap tanks, they had the same amount of cores, and what looked like the same amount of fins...

Lol, yeah, the thread title is what went though my mind when i saw the steam...:P

IIRC it was scott hart that told us about the i6 vs V8 radiator differences......he said he was running a V8 radiator in the EB

well for a genuine V8 radiator for an EB it was going to cost me $265.50 from ford, i ended up getting a heavy duty copper core from auto pro, cost me $220

Well when I got my done for my EL, I had the choice of the 260 one or a 160, your cooling system is not something you want to risk in an e series IMO.

Exactly what i was thinking, but i was checking out the two different ones, and found out that the aftermarket one is manufactured by ADRAD and aussie company, and the fact its a copper core and not an alloy one made me lean towards that one. The $40 wasnt really that big of a deal to me, just got the one i thought would be best. Ive been running it for about a month now n no probs at all, temp gauge doesnt move at all, even with the AC on during a hot day.

I had the same thing happen to me 3 days ago. Passengers side tank split in almost the same place yours did and left me stranded on the side of the road for 2 hours while i waited for my mate to turn up with his car trailer.

Cost me $250 bucks for the new radiator for the EB I6.

Sorry to hear that I have had similar problems withe LTD aswell and i still have a slow water leak now. Wat is it with the 5ltr Fairlane/LTD leaking water?

i really think the I6 rad compared to the V8 rad is deffernt. one guy i knew said he put a V8 rad into his I6 EA cause the I6 rad didnt provide enough cooling(in the 40deg heat) . once the V8 rad went in, no more troubles.

Well, I'll have a brand new radiator by lunch time... I was quoted $324.50 from bayfords, and $180.00 from auto pro... no prizes for guessing where I ordered it from :P

That exact same happened to my car 2 weeks back before the mini meet. Exact crack and explosion as you described. I picked up a reconditioned Radiator with warranty for $120. Good luck with it all...
