Default Quick question reguarding speeding.

Just want to know;

Say I'm in a 60 zone and I'm caught speeding. Whats the leeway? Is it 63k's? 64k's? Small bet with a friend, just wondering where I can find out the answer or if any of you know what the rules are.

Just Victoria too,

Thanks in advance!

An old mate of mine who is a police officer said the 'leeway' was around 10% of the given set speed, so 60 means 66km/hr+ But i guess it is at the discretion of the officer if it isn't a speed camera, i got my first speeding fine the other week in the XY, 114km in 100km zone over taking someone.

the "official" is 3 km over the speed limit so if you are doing 66 in a 60 zone you will get a fine for 63 in a 60 zone, 125 in a 100 zone and you get a fine for 122km/h, it was 10% but they can raise more money by only having a 3 km/h over limit.

I thought it was 3% over the limit.

Mum was caught doing 62 in a 60 zone once...and my Mum does NOT speed.

In Vic it's 3km's. It used to be 10% as shane3 said.

Thing that gets me is, i've always heard the leeway in speedo's from manufacturers was around 10%? Is that just a favourite rumour then?

Great, thanks guys. Anyone know where it is on the VicRoads site (if it is at all)? That site is so hard to navigate.

It's not public knowledge, for obvious reasons. Although you Victorians can thank our (SA's) Transport minister for letting it slip that it is 3 (or was it 4?) km/h.

Fixed Cameras are 2Km/hs -> Got done doing 108km/h in 100 zone, was knocked to 106km/h.

Mobile Cameras are 3km/s -> Doing 68km/h in 60 zone got knocked back to 65km/h.

Cops, depends on thier mood and weather they are out for emphise on speeding.

A few months ago a South Australian politician was discussing the speeding margin in parliament and he accidentally let slip Victoria's secret margin which was 6 km/h and so was made public and got picked up and made the news here.

Is that the same thing as being discussed here?

Haha Seems we all have a different tale - I was told by an officer that the fudge factor is 11kph all ALL speed zones

71 in 60 - 81 in 70 Etc Etc

Exactly. IMHO - That 'Slip-up' was a media stunt.

Other than by estimate, do police have speed detection devices for while they are driving? (eg, sit behind a car and a display tells you the speed of the car in front).

Count on the leeway being no wider than the width of a snake in the grass.

But you know the law. The limit is signposted, 60 is 60, keep your speedo on or under, you should be OK. Leeway exists to account for errors in speedos and is only useful for administrative procedures. Needing to know the leeway indicates you want to use it which is outside the law.

i got done recently by a fixed red light/speed camera doing 67 knocked back to 65.

also got done by a undercover car, not sure whether they were moving to not, but i got done at 124 knocked back to 122.

i always just thought it was a 2km/h leeway in vic.

I'm pretty sure it's 8km/h as DOC says (in 100k zone anyway). Thats what the copper that pulled my old man up told him. He kept getting pulled up once he put his signature 600 in.

I got done last week. I got no leeway at all plus the cop was a . At least I got done fair and square though so no complaints there. Thinking about getting them to send out a reminder notice just to annoy them :

Here in SA I believe it's +10% before you get pulled by a cop, don't know about cameras. When I'm travelling I usually sit at about 118kph (110kph limit) by my cruise control and I've only ever gotten the "finger waggle" from highway patrol cops going the other way. So far ,I've not been pulled over whenever I've pushed my luck while sitting just under the 10% threshold, ie. no more than 65 in a 60 zone, 87 in an 80 zone etc.
