I have work in Sydney next week- booked an apartment in Sydney CBD with balcony, called a skyview apartment or whatever situated above level 25, separate bedroom, lounge etc.

$135 per night, I loaded on another night for ****s and giggles after the hearing-one benefit of Covid 19- cheap accommodation!!!!

After I have done the work stuff next week I will be buggered- I plan to sit on the balcony and drink a bottle of red and view the sci fi covid 19 scene down below....

During the bushfire crisis, we had so many queries from gringos, from Canadians, even from the local Ticos, regarding if the fires were affecting our families and friends back home, and wishing us luck... Genuine sentiments too.
Now, it’s “Hey Charlie, how ya off for toilet paper? You Aussies are feckin nuts”
Both examples from typical sensationalist media of course!
To an extent, they are correct though... Australia HAS gone nuts

Current numbers for Australia: 876 positive cases, 7 deaths, 46 total recovered.

But those numbers are very much false!

With the way we are limiting the testing, the real number of positive cases would be closer to 3 times that!

Well, someone on the radio predicted around that much by today.

With the rate it's spreading the prediction is 24,000 by mid April.

The number of confirmed cases is currently doubling(or near enough) every 4 days. I put some of the figures in an excel spreadsheet and at the current rate, the number would be in the range of 40-70,000+ by mid April.
Hopefully it won't continue to increase at the current rate though, it could mean 1-2million cases by the end of April.
The big question is, how long before the country is put in to lockdown? We are fast approaching the number of cases that caused other countries and now, some US states to be shutdown.

So, 876x3=2268 pos cases with 7 deaths, that would make the fatality rate of only 0.38%.

The 7 deaths reported are 7 of the 876 recorded positive cases. These people were tested, found to be positive, and have then passed away. I believe this to be correct.

A serious question, and I don't know the answer, and I doubt anyone could even answer this question..., but, have there been any deaths from Covid that have not been officially recorded?

Could there be deaths from Covid that have been missed because the deceased have not/were not tested (either before or after death), and therefore were not officially on the positive list? Has everyone over the age of 70 who have passed away in the last couple of weeks, from Covid like symptoms been tested for Covid?

I had a smoko on Newcastle beach today for 15 minutes and was shocked at how many people were on the beach and in the water within .5 metres of one another. Message not sinking in.

In Sydney next week I will be forced to work with 3 people within .5 metres of me for 4 days from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm... 🙄

Here's a another question. How many of the 7 that have passed would have been in a much better situation if they had of caught the regular flu?

Statistics coming from Italy show 99% of those who've died from Covid-19 have prior health complications.

I doubt it. Anyone displaying any COVID-19 symptom, one of the first things is testing for COVID-19.

You're mixing up CFR and IFR. IFR is the fatality rate when you extrapolate to all the undiagnosed cases. The flu mortality rate also goes down when you look at the IFR.

but given that the mean time to die is about 2 weeks (I heard this somewhere - so probably wrong)
Then the 7 deaths should be compared to total cases 2 weeks ago - what % is that ?

They're only testing people with travel history or someone who has come into contact with someone with travel history.

You can't just go in and get tested just because you've got symptoms, they're worrying about it at work and anyone with a cold is being treated like they've got tuberculosis

Here's a high profile case to use as an example of how Australia is in bad shape with regards to how we are conducting our Covi testing and isolation rules.

Channel 9's Richard Wilkins had contact with Tom Hanks wife Rita on the 7th of March, both at the studios and outside (Opera House). After the Wilson's reported they had tested positive (March 12), Richard Wilkins himself thought he might as well get checked (was not advised by CH9 to do so), even tough he had absolutely no symptoms whatsoever. He was tested positive a day and a bit later, and reported as positive on March 15.

9 days later, Wilkins still showed no symptoms, and did another test Thursday (March 19), again testing positive. He was on TV this morning saying he feels great and is concerned that this virus has shown no symptoms before and after he tested positive. He is 65 years old, in the medium/high risk category. To be cleared, people have to test negative twice in a 24 hour period. And as Wilkins tested positive, he now has to wait a few more days for another test.

This example shows that you can be of any age - be infected - not know it - and unknowingly be passing it on to people. Just go to any shopping centre in Australia, even now after all the warning have been made clear, and you will see how serious 99% of Australia is taking this.

The South Korean example of testing anyone and everyone that rocked up to a drive-through testing centre, is THE best way to deal with the spread. Anyone who was tested was told to isolate until the results came through (6-8 hours after test). And most South Koreans isolated at home even though they tested negative. We don't have enough, and currently cannot produce our own Covi testing kits, to test anyone who wants to be checked.

Compare what South Korea did to what Australia is doing, and we really are up **** creek without a paddle.

i think you are being alarmist, just like the media.

if you overhype a situation it often has the opposite effect than what is intended. In this case, the seriousness of the situation isn't really making an impact because the media are going over the top. People just switch off.

Using hypothetical assumptions and 'possible outcomes' to try to get the message across is counter productive.

Testing kits are not unlimited. What more do you expect them to do? If you don't have the resources to test everyone you have to prioritise somehow. Currently it is toward those who are symptomatic and/or have been travelling or been in contact with someone who has.

Flu shots are available now at the major pharmacies. Winter is ending in the other half. This could be affecting the larger death toll and people with compromised immune systems.

Correct. The efficacy of the flu vaccine is typically in the single digit percent according to the manufacturers package insert.

Anyone after a good science fiction read should ask for the insert of the flu vaccine when they line up for it next.

2GB has been advertising the Flu shot for Chemist Warehouse for weeks now.

2 weeks ago I was at my doctor in Marrickville to get the 1yr shots for my daughter.

I asked if I can go and grab the Flu shot from the chemist so he can give it to me. No worries.

Went to Chemist Warehouse and was shocked that they will not get it till the end of April - and I had to book it online.

I asked why they are advertising it now and what is the delay and she said most stores are on a similar time frame and she had no clue of the advertising.

Sure enough, if you go to Chemist Warehouse and try to book the Flu shot in Marrickville the first date available is 28th April.

I did email 2GB asking why they are advertising a product in Late Feb / early March that isn't available for months and they just replied saying thanks for the email.

Ok, I have fooled around with the site.

Bankstown and Hyde Park 30th March, Punchbowl 6th April, Campsie May 11!, Hurstville April 2nd.

Why such a huge gap in availability?????

May book the Hyde park one and get it done before I start work. Sooner the better.

Edit: Just tried to book Hyde Park. They have a glitch in their system. Calendar says ther have available bookings, but then below both morning and afternoon slots booked out. Same with the 31st.

Go figure....

Yep, same here, the Wife and I discussed it a fortnight ago so I looked on the website, not available until 31st March, no bookings available until late April and only a few spots, tried other outlets and the wait was longer again.
As my Wife works in aged care if they haven't had it done by 1/5 they cant go to work.
