They are a good piece of gear...

lmao, an 800,000km diff! That's like Old Testament-spec

My diff in its former guise was a 3.27 LSD, I did 300,000kms in it before swapping the gears & LSD for a set of 4.11s, which have been on for 60,000kms now. Both incarnations show(ed) no signs of deterioration. The 4.11 LSD sounds like a spool in carparks, it groans & skips a little, as it's tighter than a 12yo

If I got another E-Series as a project though I'd chuck a lokka in it.

Mine's done about 280,000km, but a year or two ago (so about 20,000km's) I put in a minispool, and even I'm surprised it hasn't snapped an axle yet. It feels fine though and is quiet as a mouse so I guess it'll be in there for quite a while longer yet.

My EA diff has done 400,000km... I think that's one of the highest. It's screaming for retirement now though, as everyone who has been in it knows. Never been out of the car, one of the only things left to change.

Pretty sure Wayne is referring to Tiga_EL but his diff has been changed at least once or twice.

mine was 220,000km old and on right turns it would single but stright line and left corners never singled on me and has no noises.
now i have a 3.7lsd and the ls is tight as but the gears have a chip in them so it makes a very strange noise on cruising.
cheers josh.

I've never busted an axle, crownwheel or pinion, but the pinion bearing in my XR6 got REALLY noisy towards the end, before I got another diff and put 3.9s in it.

I forgave it though, because I thrashed the hell out of it. LSD was ok for a while but then started to get a but unpredictable after a skidpan day at Gympie, when it was in my (then) girlfriends ED Fairmont.

Got a totally fresh diff built up with new 3.9 gears, new bearings, machined and shimmed LSD, cost me about $1100 or more I think. Took it to morgan park, it started to sound nasty, changed the oil then went out again a couple of months later, and changed the oil after that.

It was Fuct. Open wheeled pretty much all the time, apart from launching off the line going dead straight. Biggest waste of money evar.

I then got a 3.27:1 open diff from the trading post with unknown km on it, threw in a lokka and put it in the car. Then turbocharged the car

It did 20,000km in the XR with no problems, now it's in the ED and the pinion bearing is starting to get noisy in this one too. I think flat changing, and clutching it to initiate a drift may be the cause

Once I get new bearings put in it will be sweet again.

Who needs a 9 inch diff? Pfft.

it should be real easy to tell how many of your back wheels are spinning. if not, get some practice. during burnouts, if the car stays nice and straight and back doesnt make any sideways movement, its single spinning. if the back is kicking to one side or feels like youre on ice back there, its 2. as for drift its even easier, if its single spinning, you wont be able to pull off any drift lol. it'll be revving out and there will be tyre noise, but itll pretty much be driving/SSing through the corner by then, not drifting.

welded up centres(cig) are by far the best and cheapest cause when they bust you just buzz it up and off you go just like a newbie
